Maïa Tarassoff, an architect from Paris, and a mother of 2 children (5 and 8). In 2013, her young family relocated to Vancouver in search of an adventure and a better lifestyle with greater landscape.
Maïa started Petit Architect in 2017 with the mission to make architecture more accessible to children and youth. She teaches hands-on classes and camps (online and in person) and does workshops in schools. Her curriculum is focused on sustainability, social impact and energy efficiency.
Her family strives to have a lower energy footprint, and they love riding their bikes on the Arbutus bike way, going to the beach and skiing on the north shore.
Did you imagine that you’d be a mom at the age that you became a mom?
For a long time I wasn’t sure about having kids at all because of the planet… But when I turned 30, that changed, and it became a deep wish.
Describe your children in a single sentence.
Kind hearted, very energetic, intelligent little creatures that make my life complete and never boring!
How have you changed as a person since becoming a mom?
Becoming a mom has changed me in the deepest way! I don’t think anyone can imagine how your life gets transformed in a moment, before you actually give birth. Your life is just so different after that! For the better, and for the worse – haha!
I am more resilient, more patient, and I want to believe happier. But also definitely busier, and more conscient of the time passing very fast! Watching your kids grow is precious, and it happens so fast!
What has been the hardest thing about being a mom?
Probably the lack of time for myself, we don’t have much family support, and it’s full on everyday, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! I cherish the time with them but also the time away from them, when I can actually have it 🙂 I am dreaming of a getaway with only adults right now! Also, worrying about someone else, especially my first baby, was very overwhelming at first. It gets easier after:)
What do you love most about being a mom?
I love watching little humans grow, and showing them the world. I love being loved as a mom : the hugs, cuddles and kisses!
Do you have a favourite family activity?
We’ve been doing a lot of board games as my kids are a bit older, it’s becoming more and more enjoyable as a family! Sometimes we do a “house party”, dance around and sing karaoke. My kids love to make crafts with me too. But what we love most is traveling together and visiting new places! We have plans to go on a long (6 months) trip with our kids, hopefully we can do it in the next few years…
What advice can you give our mama readers?
Don’t forget to take time for yourself! You are a mom, but also a woman, and you can still have some fun!
Also, everything is a phase, it will pass, you have to adjust all the time and stop worrying and enjoy all of it. It does go too fast!
