Here comes the weekend, and we’ve got a great list of fun family activities so you and your kiddos can have the best weekend ever. You can take in a family movie, learn about healthy food choices, or kick off summer with a party. You can celebrate the opening of a brand new park and the opening of a brand new playground. There’s a frog safari, salmon festival, and soapbox derby. Learn all about birds, trains, or West African musical instruments. There is no shortage of great family fun to be had this weekend! We’ve listed out just a few of the fantastic events happening this weekend in Metro Vancouver. Family Movie Night – Home
Friday, June 24th, 6 pm – 8 pm, Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre, 990 West 59th Avenue, Vancouver, Cost: $3
Bring the whole family and join us for a fun filled evening watching different movies each month! Pizza, popcorn and drinks provided! Please pre-register and check in 15 minutes early. All Ages $3/person

Hungry Hippo Kids Tour
Saturday, June 25th, 10 am – 11:30 am, Save on Foods UBC, 5854 Berton Avenue, Vancouver, Cost: Free
The Hungry Hippo Kids Tour is coming to Save on Foods in Wesbrook Village! Register for a free tour led by registered dieticians and learn how to make healthy food choices. Children will learn about the benefits of fruits and vegetables through an interactive scavenger hunt and will receive a free Hungry Hippo Handbook to take home! Park Play Palooza at Hazelgrove Park
Saturday, June 25th, 10 am – 2 pm, Hazelgrove Park, 7080 190 Street, Surrey, Cost: Free
This year, Palooza will be at Hazelgrove Park, which is the newest and largest parks at East Clayton. The official park opening will start off with the ribbon cutting, following live music and dancing. Park Play Palooza kick starts the FREE Park Play summer program for kids! Head down to climb the rock wall, get your face painted, listen to live music, meet summer Park Play staff and so much more. There’s something fun for the whole family!

Party in the Plaza
Saturday, June 25th, 12 pm – 3 pm, McBurney Plaza, Fraser Highway at 205th Street, Langley, Cost: Free
Hello, summer! Let’s celebrate in McBurney Plaza as we look forward to the warm months ahead. The sound of steel drums will be in the air as we kick off the season. Enjoy mouthwatering samples from Match Eatery & Public House fresh off of the BBQ! Kick back and relax as you listen to all your favourite backyard warm weather hits performed by 2015 Country Music Nominee Andrew Christopher. Snap a photo at the summertime photo booth, grab a cool treat, and take home a summer keepsake caricature by Corycatures. This is one summertime party you do not want to miss!

Frog Pond Safari
Saturday, June 25th, 1 pm – 4 pm, Campbell Valley Regional Park, Langley, Cost: Free
Pond dip for frogs, water tigers, whirly-gigs and more. Find out how these unique creatures have adapted to their watery world through interactive games, stories and crafts.

Steveston Salmon Festival presents Bullhead Derby
Sunday, June 26th, 9 am – 12 pm, Garry Point Park, Steveston, Richmond
The 71st Annual Steveston Salmon Festival, presented by Save-on-Foods and PriceSmart Foods, kicks off on Sunday, June 26th with the annual Bullhead Derby hosted by the Richmond Golden Rods and Reels Society. The Bullhead Derby is open to kids 12 and under and seniors 65+. Pack your lawn chairs, fishing rods, and barbless hooks and join us at Garry Point Park in Steveston for a fun morning with the family. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer on the fishers.

Birds of a Feather: Beaver Lake’s Birds
Sunday, June 26th, 9 am – 11 am, Stanley Park, Vancouver, Cost: By Donation
On a sunny morning, Beaver Lake is the place to be in late June. This lily-choked lake provides homes for Marsh Wren, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Willow Flycatchers and many others that may have already raised two or more broods of offspring.

ArtStarts on Saturdays presents Fana Soro: West African Music for Kids
Saturday, June 25th, 11 am – 2 pm, ArtStarts Gallery, 808 Richards Street, Vancouver, Cost; Free
Sunday, June 26th, 11 am – 2 pm, River Market at Westminster Quay, 810 Quayside Drive, New Westminster, Cost: Free
Through interactions with individuals of diverse cultures, Fana Soro believes that young people build their understanding and appreciation for art and culture. Join Fana for an interactive workshop to explore the social and cultural significance of West African instruments and music. Sessions start at 11am and 1pm. Free! No pre-registration necessary. ArtStarts on Saturdays is a monthly series for families, featuring free, fun, 45-minute creative arts workshops with some of the best children’s artists.

Model Railway Open House
Sunday, June 26th, 1 pm – 4 pm, Maple Ridge Museum, 22520 116th Avenue, Maple Ridge
The Dewdney-Alouette Railway Society hosts this open house on the last Sunday of every month throughout the year. Come and discover the world of model railroading and diorama building from the experts. It’s a great family outing that appeals to all ages.

Moody Park Playground Opening
Saturday, June 25th, 1 pm – 3 pm, Moody Park, New Westminster, Cost: Free
Join us for the official opening of the Moody Park Playground! The event will consist of a short formal program with Mayor and Council followed by fun in the park with Play Leaders, music, face painting and a BBQ!

In addition to these great events, don’t forget, there are farmers’ markets to visit, outdoor public pools to splash around in, and great family bike rides to take!
