5 things to do with your kids before summer ends

The start of school is just days away and while it’s easy to get pulled into the excitement and craziness of back to school, we like to take some time at the end of summer to do a few special activities with our kiddos. Nothing too crazy, just a few things that make the last days of summer break extra special.

1. Have a “stay up late” party. Let the kids stay up past their bedtime, make popcorn, watch a movie outdoors, look for shooting stars, and play flashlight tag. Tie this into a backyard campout for the ultimate last hurrah of summer.

2. Go to the PNE (or waterslides or…). Pick one place for that final big family outing. Head somewhere that’s only open for the summer like the PNE, the waterslides, Theatre Under the Stars, or pack a picnic and head to your neighbourhood outdoor pool.

3. Create a summer memory box. Pull out all the ticket stubs, maps, seashells, and pretty rocks that were collected over the summer and have your kiddos create a memory box of all the awesome things your family did over the summer. They can draw pictures of places they visited and write little notes (or dictate them to you) of their favourite summer memories.

4. Host a backyard BBQ and invite the neighbours. BBQ up some hot dogs, make some lemonade and invite friends over for a “goodbye to summer” BBQ. Make it a potluck for even easier hosting. Have the kids decorate their bikes for a bike parade, or try out some old school party games like sack races, three legged races, and egg races.

5. Go for a walk after dinner. It won’t be long until the days are so short that it’s dark out before dessert, so as soon as the dishes are done (or leave them in the sink – we won’t tell), head out on a family walk around the neighbourhood. Stop by your favourite playground, grab an ice cream cone and savour the warm weather and making memories with your family.
