Every year we test and try some safer sunscreens for the kiddos and ourselves. Sunscreens with less of the bad stuff and more of the good stuff, like UVA filters and zinc oxide. We’ve got a few old favourites and some new stars. And here’s a handy sunscreen primer from the Environmental Working Group to get you started off on the right – unburned – foot!
Note: we know there’s some controversy around using spray sunscreens on kiddos but we’ve included some sprays we like here as they’re relatively “heavy” rather than misty and you can always spray them onto your hands and then apply them to your little ones that way if you’d rather avoid sprays.
Goddess Garden Kids Natural Sunscreen Trigger Spray, SPF 30: The Goddess Garden line, a yoyomama fave, was a top pick for our kids as they “smell good, rub in easily and aren’t too sticky.” This spray is handy as you can lock the trigger down when it’s in your purse or beach bag to avoid spills and messes and the whole family likes the consistency.
Goddess Garden Organics Kids Natural Sunscreen Continuous Spray, SPF 30: another top pick with the yoyo kiddos, like all the Goddess Garden sunscreens we tried, this one is non-nano, reef safe, non-GMO, biodegradable, vegan, cruelty-free, and doesn’t contain alcohol, parabens, or phthalates. The continuous spray feature is super handy and it’s the same easy-to-apply consistency as their other sprays and creams.
Goddess Garden Organics Kids 30 Natural Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30: Our favourite lotion for the family, this was easy to spread and “lighter” than some organic, creamy sunscreens. And like all the Goddess Garden products it’s water resistant for up to 40 minutes.
Kiss My Face Kids Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30: If you like creamy sunscreens you’ll want to try this one. New to the yoyomama sunscreen pantheon, we’ve had this on our radar for awhile. It doesn’t contain nanoparticles, phthalates, fragrances, artificial colors or any other animal ingredients and it’s gluten-free, biodegradable and not tested on animals. It’s also water resistant for up to 40 minutes and not too whitening.
Green Beaver Kids Natural Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for Kids, SPF 40: We love Green Beaver because they’re a Canadian company focusing on safer personal care products and our kids love their sunscreen because it “smells really good”. It’s thicker and creamier than Goddess Garden but it still spreads and rubs in well. It’s also gluten-free, vegan, non-nano, non-silicone coated, waterproof and biodegradable.
Green Beaver Natural Mineral Sunscreen Spray for Kids, SPF 27: This is another spray we love for its ease of application, it’s very light, easy to rub in and not too sticky. As with their cream is free of all sorts of icky things but it is the only one we tested that’s not water resistant which makes like less of a handy beach or water park sunscreen. It’s a great “light day” option however when you want to ensure you’re kids are covered while you’re out and about. We think they must have rejigged the formula since our last test as it’s less greasy than we recall.
Thanks to Whole Foods for kitting us out with heaps of sunscreen to test!
