Everyone needs to get away now and again – mamas included! So grab your best gal pals and head out for a weekend adventure to one of these five awesome places, all just a short drive from Metro Vancouver. If you can’t swing a trip without kids in tow, don’t fret; we’ve got you covered with a few kid-friendly tips for each of the places we’re recommending.
Did we forget to mention your favourite place to visit with your girlfriends? Let us know in the comments below!
If you and your girlfriends are looking to relax, meditate, and centre your chi, head to Bowen Island for a rejuvenating yoga retreat at Nectar Yoga B&B. A short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay takes you to the idyllic island, and once there you can enjoy the lovely farmers’ and artisan markets, or explore art galleries and museums. Rent a couple of scooters to see the island in a fun new way. If you’ve got kids along for the adventure, try a sea kayaking tour around the Bowen Island inlets.
Harrison Hot Springs
Harrison is one of our favourite family getaways, and it also makes for a great weekend trip with your friends. Soak in the hot springs, enjoy a spa day, and eat some delicious food. You can make it a luxury getaway and stay at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa, or rough it a little by camping at one of the campgrounds nearby. Looking for something more active to do? Bring along your bikes and head out on the Circle Farm Tour. If you’ve got kids with you, check out our list of 10 fun things to do with your family this summer in Harrison Hot Springs.
If you are up for a bit longer of a drive, a girl’s weekend in Tofino is hard to beat. Take some surf lessons (we love Surf Sister) and catch a wave or two. Grab some delicious eats at Tacofino, and take a walk along the beach. Are the kids tagging along? The family-oriented, Pacific Sands Beach Resort on Cox Bay is a great choice. Or rent a cabin at the Crystal Cove Resort where your kiddos will have endless fun playing at their adventure playground.
If you’ve got an adventurous bunch of girlfriends, a trip to Squamish is a must. Pack those mountain bikes, hiking boots, and your sense of adventure. Take a trek up the Sea to Sky Gondola (an awesome activity with kids in tow, by the way), hike the Chief or go for a fun bike ride. Go white water rafting, try kite surfing, or take a fascinating indigenous tour. Kids along for the fun? Check out the West Coast Railway Heritage Park or, if you have kids ages 7+, try out the brand new Rope Runner Park.
Wine tours, beaches, and glorious weather – there is much to love about the Okanagan! We like to time our girl’s trips to the Okanagan with an awesome festival, like the Penticton Peach Festival – an amazing music (and more) festival with some great concerts and family-friendly fun too, in case the kids are joining you on your trip. Speaking of kids, if they tagged along, you should definitely head to the Kettle Valley Railway for an amazing trip on a historic railway, or if you happen to be near Kelowna, give the WildPlay Element Park a try — it’s a super fun ropes course with zip lines and climbing apparatus. And of course, a trip or two to the beach is a must!
