from hand and heart

Valentine’s Day has changed a lot since we were kids, when very few Valentine’s cards were store-bought and kids didn’t come home with a swag bag second only to Halloween. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but we have a soft spot for the handmade Valentines our kids bring home. So we thought we’d get their creative juices flowing with a love day project from Winnie Tam of artspace.

vancouver: what to do, what to do?

There are plenty of opportunities to learn this weekend in the Lower Mainland: Kids can join in for nature-themed story times at the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, see an impressive fossil collection at TELUS World of Science, or go on a Nature walk with the Stanley Park ecology Society. Further afield, families can enjoy World Wetlands Day Celebration and the Healthy Kids Preschool Fair. There are still some Lunar New Year celebrations happening as well. Overall it's a quiet weekend, but don't worry, there are loads of Valentine's Day events on the horizon for next week!

toronto: what to do, what to do?

Even though the kids may be hard-pressed to find enough snow to build a snowman or go sledding these days in the city, there are still plenty of winter-themed festivals and fun on the go. Take in any number of winterfest events happening across the GTA; celebrate Black History Month with the National Film Board’s Mediatheque, or at Kuumba held at Harbourfront Centre; or grab the kids and head outdoors for a snowshoe adventure at Kortright! If arts and crafts are more your family’s cup of tea, head to the Science Centre for a few kid-friendly workshops, or get a jump on Valentine’s Day with a card-making workshop at Todmorden Mills. Enjoy the weekend!

tutu for you

We're all about dressing up in our house. We're reticent, however, to spend tonnes of money on togs that will be spilled on, torn and generally played with until they dissolve. Bowing to a request for more ballerina related attire, we decided to make some tutus...and get our primas to lend a hand.

hey macaron-a

When it comes to baked goods we carry no cultural allegiance. French, Dutch, German, Canadian, or Italian...we eat them all. So when we were tipped to a new pastry destination in Coal Harbour a bit off the beaten path, we thought it was high time we got our macaron on at Soirette.

Soirette is the second child of mum, biomedical engineer, and Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry Chef Shobna Kannusamy. After Shobna had her first child she evidently wasn't busy enough, so she gave birth to a patisserie. Her tiny little jewel box of a shop is filled with delicate macarons that look too pretty to be eaten, and with aromas of exotic teas.

knights in shining armour

While Toronto is well known for Casa Loma, it’s also home to another castle of sorts: Medieval Times. And it’s one with knights, horses, sword fights, cheering, jeering, jousting, and family fun at its best.

Located on the CNE grounds, Toronto’s Medieval Times is the only one in Canada (there are multiple U.S. locations). It’s essentially dinner theatre for families, inspired by the feasts and tournaments of the 11th century. Visitors enjoy a four-course banquet meal while they cheer on one of six Knights competing for victory. This is not “watch and be quiet” kind of theatre. In fact, the louder you are, the better.

encyclopaedia 2.0

Can you get through a whole dinner party without somebody googling something by dessert? We can’t. The accessibility of information has fuelled our insatiable need to know, or, more often, to verify crazy facts right now. But for our kids we recognize that computers, tablets, smart phones, and such are primarily entertainment. Sure, it’s easy to download a few apps and let them have a go at it, but as they grow older we’d really love them to appreciate the internet as a source of learning. So we’re trying to introduce some more knowledge-based online content.
