Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year, and the Spring Festival — it goes by many names. Friday, February 16th marks the start of the New Lunar Year and the year of the Dog. Whatever you call it, it’s time to celebrate! We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful multi-cultural city; there are numerous events all around Metro Vancouver for you and your family to attend. We’ve organized the events first by city, then by date to help you narrow down the best celebrations for you and your family to attend. Some events have already started, and others go all the way to March, so make sure to check the date listed. Did we miss an event near you? Lunar New Year Lantern Making at McGill
Saturday, February 17th, 2 pm – 4 pm, McGill Library, 4595 Albert Street, Burnaby
Families, teens and adults are invited to drop in between 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm to make a lantern and welcome in the year of the dog. Ages 6 and up. Adults must accompany children younger than 10 years old. Supplies are limited, please arrive early. Drop in, free, no registration.

Lunar New Year Makerspace at Cameron: Cards and Crafts
Sunday, February 18th, 2 pm – 4 pm, Cameron Recreation Centre, 9523 Cameron Street, Burnaby
All ages welcome! Happy Lunar New Year! Get crafty at Cameron and make your own lanterns to celebrate the year of the dog. This free children’s program is drop-In. No registration required. Caregivers are required to accompany children under 10 years old.

The Heights: Lunar New Year

Celebrating the multiculturalism found within our diverse community, the HMA hosts an annual Lunar New Year celebration in the Heights. Hastings Street comes alive with music and dance, as traditional and colourful lion dancers perform special blessings to bring luck and prosperity to Heights merchants. Lucky Heights shoppers receive a fortune cookies and red envelopes, which contain special messages and the chance to win various Heights gift certificates! Spot the Lion Dancers on Hastings Street (between Gamma and Boundary) and receive a fortune cookie, a lucky red envelope, and a chance to win great prizes!

From 12pm to 3pm, we will be holding traditional lunar new year’s crafts for all ages which will then be followed by the always stunning Lion Dance blessing throughout the Market, beginning at 3:00pm. When chanting the Mahakala mantra or reciting his sadhana, practitioners’ negative thoughts and actions are purified and they are protected from negative forces.

Granville Island will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a traditional Lion Dance parade starting at 10:30am in the Public Market. Follow the lion dancers as they travel to the Net Loft, Creekhouse and Railspur Alley. Take in a Sugar Painting showcase from 11am to 2pm, where the artist uses a traditional Chinese form of folk art using hot, liquid sugar to create two or three dimensional figures.

Join the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena to celebrate Chinese New Year! Prior to the game, the Canucks will sport a new look in warm-ups. The warm-up jerseys will be red with Year of the Dog decorations on the shoulder. Select game worn warm-up jerseys will be available in the Canucks team store for purchase during the game. 12 Girls Band Celebrates Chinese New Year
Monday, February 19th, Orpheum Theatre, 601 Smithe Street, Vancouver
Join us at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to watch the 12 Girls Band during the Lunar New Year! 12 Girls Band is a unique Chinese folk music group, inspired by the art of Yue Fang, the female ensemble that played in the royal courts of the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 C.E.). Established in 2001, the members were selected by audition from more than 4000 contestants. From thousands of auditions, producer Wang Xiao Jing (the father of Chinese rock music) brought together twelve young virtuosos who played ancient Chinese instruments. The members of this chart-topping all-female music group are much admired musical ambassadors of Chinese music.

These free events will celebrate Asian culture with traditional activities including traditional performances, cultural activities, giveaways and more! Schedule of Events – 9:30 am – 12 pm: West Vancouver Community Centre (2121 Marine Drive), Lalji Family Atrium (main lobby). 1–4 pm: Park Royal Village Square (the fountain beside Whole Foods Market; in case of rain, the festivities will be moved to the breezeway beside Lush).

White Rock
