It’s Emergency Preparedness Week and we’ve decided to make it count by overcoming a bit of a block we’ve had, with the help of Lena Jerabek from Beesafe Solutions. See, we generally consider ourselves to be very safety conscious: we don’t fudge it on booster seats; we stick to the arm’s length rule in the swimming pool; and we’re very aware that one of the leading causes of hospitalization for children is burns. And yet, for the life of us, we can’t seem to get our act together and get an emergency preparedness kit ready.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and as we’ve said time and time again, we here at yoyomama headquarters are big fans of mums and all the things they do. Now while the joys of motherhood are gift enough…on Mother’s Day, most mums enjoy an acknowledgement of some kind just to say “thanks.” So in honour of our favourite day of the year, we yoyomamas are sharing a few of our favourite Mother’s Day gifts of gratitude.

Earth Day may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean we can – or should – stop thinking about being green. We’re big fans of taking small green steps that, over time, make a big difference. Last week we tackled greener cleaning and supporting a healthy environment year round. Today we’re talking about what’s going on to (and therefore into) your body, thanks to Adria Vasil’s newest book – Ecoholic Body: Your Ultimate Earth-friendly Guide To Living Healthy And Looking Good.

Have you ever wondered if your child will outgrow his or her pickiness? Or wished you didn’t have to tote reusable containers of cheddar bunnies with you wherever you go? If holidays in your house are anything like ours, they’re likely marked by a mad scramble to make treats to take to class parties. And as artisan cupcake, cookie and cake pop stores up the ante, our online searches for themed baking ideas has pushed our skills with the piping bag past its limits. So with Easter parties scheduled for the end of the week, we thought we’d take a different approach.
We’re calling it edible crafts – Easter-themed treats where the kids do some of the making, and the lion’s share of the decorating. It’s win-win: They’ll be proud and we’ll be far less stressed.

Our five year old spent last week at Pedalheads bike camp learning to ride. While we couldn’t be more thrilled that he’d ditched the training wheels by day two and is riding for longer spurts each day we recognize that there’s a way to go before we’re ready for road riding. So we turned to Nick Pavlakis, the lei-wearing, high-fiving fearless camp leader for next steps.

With the first day of spring this week, our thoughts have turned to gardening. It’s the time of year where our great ambitions for our community garden plot are unsullied by the realities of blight, seeds that don’t sprout, and our bad watering habits. The only problem with the garden plot is that the kids can’t check in on their own crops whenever they fancy, so this year we were grateful for the suggestion of container gardens on the deck that they can tend at their pleasure.

A parent we know recently woke up to a note from their eight-year-old…a print of a puppy with this short, but to the point, pink marker message beneath: “I need a dog”. We know they aren’t the only one trying to broker rash deals with parents, so we talked to Paula Neuman, Humane Education Manager at the BC SPCA about kids and pets.

As mums, we spend loads of time taking care of our family’s health. Sick kid? You cancel work and stock up on supplies. Dentist appointment? Alerts beeping on every device. But when it comes to our own health, well, we …
