We’re firmly convinced plastic’s not fantastic, but it can be hard to avoid in packaging. Until now, that is. Thanks to The Soap Dispensary, a new(ish) store on Main Street near 20th, you can either reuse your existing containers or pick up containers to be refilled with everything from soaps and household cleaners, to borax and baking soda.

We have fond memories of putting on elaborate puppet shows for our parents and their (unlucky) friends when we were kids. Which is why we felt giddy with nostalgia when we came across Open Door Designs, a Toronto company that makes portable theatres and puppets sure to impress.

When it comes to baked goods we carry no cultural allegiance. French, Dutch, German, Canadian, or Italian...we eat them all. So when we were tipped to a new pastry destination in Coal Harbour a bit off the beaten path, we thought it was high time we got our macaron on at Soirette.

Soirette is the second child of mum, biomedical engineer, and Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry Chef Shobna Kannusamy. After Shobna had her first child she evidently wasn't busy enough, so she gave birth to a patisserie. Her tiny little jewel box of a shop is filled with delicate macarons that look too pretty to be eaten, and with aromas of exotic teas.

While Toronto is well known for Casa Loma, it’s also home to another castle of sorts: Medieval Times. And it’s one with knights, horses, sword fights, cheering, jeering, jousting, and family fun at its best.

Located on the CNE grounds, Toronto’s Medieval Times is the only one in Canada (there are multiple U.S. locations). It’s essentially dinner theatre for families, inspired by the feasts and tournaments of the 11th century. Visitors enjoy a four-course banquet meal while they cheer on one of six Knights competing for victory. This is not “watch and be quiet” kind of theatre. In fact, the louder you are, the better.

We’re all about the silver linings here. And one of the unintended consequences of the move to a two-week spring break in Vancouver due to District Closure days is there is far more choice for Spring Break camps than there used to be.

With our recent weather that could almost be classified as “spring like”, some of the usual kid pastimes like snow fort building and sledding are on hold until we get more of the white stuff. So we thought it was a good time for a road trip outside the city, to a place that will get everyone, well, outside: Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

Last year we wrote of our daytripping adventures in New Westminster and one of our favourite haunts, the River Market, which at that time had only a smattering of stores. Since then the location has exploded in a whirlwind of activity and retailers, so we thought it was time for a bit of a River Market redux.

While we should be blanketed in snow by now, things are still fairly (disconcertingly) green in the GTA. But the snow is coming (we promised our snow-angel loving kiddo yesterday, so it’d better be), which means we can shine up the skis and get ready to hit the slopes.

This month, children in kindergarten start bringing independent reading books home. While the kids we’ve talked to seem thrilled, some parents are feeling stressed about how to help their child learn to read. So we turned to Dr. Christianne Hayward, founder of the Lyceum of Literature and Art, for some tips. Christianne has a PhD focused on children’s literature curriculums, teaches at post-secondary institutions, and has been running her parent/youth bookclubs (preschool-grade 12) since 1996.

But this combo café, grocery, and gift store is très charmant (and family-friendly), so we wanted to chime in as well.
