green city

We’re lucky that living in Toronto doesn’t mean sacrificing green space. Despite the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan city, there are plenty of parks and outdoor havens to enjoy. And Evergreen Brick Works, located two minutes off the busy DVP, is no exception.

bumps, bites and burns

Enjoying all the fun summer brings does have a downside, namely a proliferation of pint-sized bumps, bites, and burns. So we’ve gathered an eco-friendly arsenal for your first aid kit to combat summer “owies”, because being prepared means you’ll also enjoy your summer more. Plus, all these multi-tasking products are safe for use on adults and kids, and fit easily into a diaper or beach bag.

fabulous frozen fruit

According to the calendar, summer has arrived. According to the weatherman…not so much. Be that as it may, we are choosing to embrace summer and all it has to offer: Fresh fruit at the markets, flip-flops and pedicures, and frozen yummy treats. Sadly, most frozen goodies out there are filled with sugar, preservatives, dyes galore, and other nastiness. Luckily for us Lower Mainlanders, we can now satisfy our frozen cravings with Rico ‘n Lalo.

sun in

Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes their guide to sunscreen, reviewing the best sunscreens (those that provide the most protection via the least hazardous chemicals), the latest research, ingredients to avoid, sun safety tips, and more. And every year we track down their most highly rated kids’ sunscreens and put them to the test. This year we’ve got two for the babes, and one for you, because experience has proven that we’re really good at making sure our kids are covered, but sometimes we forgot about our own skin…

good old fashioned clean

Until we had kids, we never realized the portion of our life that we could lose to doing laundry. It’s a Sisyphean endeavour – all the sorting and the pre-treating and the washing and the drying and the folding and the putting away. And then doing it all over again. So when we tried out Nellie’s All-Natural Cleaning Products, we did so with the hopes that they could put a little bit of joy in our most hated of household chores.

spring cleaning

Back when we reviewed Vancouver company AspenClean’s greener cleaners we posited that eco-friendly cleaning was all well and good but we suspected that someone else cleaning your house for you with eco-friendly cleaners was even better. We decided to put that theory to the test and engage AspenClean to do a full meal deal spring clean, because not only did our house sorely need it but we hoped it might inspire springier weather.

play with your food!

Food. In some households, it really is a four-letter word. Picky kids can turn a simple meal into a full scale war, complete with battle plans, offensive strikes, and peace talk negotiations with pleas of “Just try one bite.” One way to get that fussy 4-year old excited about her food is to get her in the kitchen, which is why we’ve been playing with Curious Chef and The Greens by Boston Warehouse.

green is good

There are times when we wonder if one of the reasons we had kids was to play with their toys. Not the toys that make horrid sounds (those make us want to scream and hurl things through the window), but the simple toys that get our imaginations roaring. Needless to say, we were more than a little bit excited to get on the floor and play with the new batch of recycled fun from Green Toys™.

steel this

You love your stainless steel containers for snacks and lunches, but when it comes to storing leftovers they’re not quite so handy (they look good, but what’s inside?) You love your glass Pyrex (great visibility), but you’re not so keen on the plastic lids. So what’s a leftover storing mama to do? Well, you could invest in Onyx’s new Glass and Stainless Steel Airtight Containers?

market madness

There’s nothing quite like the freshness and quality of buying from a Farmer’s Market. So we love that in Toronto we don’t have to wait until summer to get our hands on the goods. St. Lawrence Market, located right in the middle of the city, is filled with market merchants, is open year-round, and is a perfect Saturday outing for the whole family.
