toronto: what to do, what to do?

With the holidays still in full swing (and school out for another week for most), there’s still plenty of fun to be had in T.O. despite things more quiet on the events front. Bake some old-fashioned gingerbread cookies at historic Fort York; visit the ROM or the Science Centre for some family fun; take in a family-friendly New Year’s celebration at the Zoo; or brave the chilly Beaches water for charity. And you can always check out our ongoing holiday fun guide if you need some more seasonal inspiration.

Just a reminder: we’ll be taking the first week of January to recharge our editorial batteries and get organized for a great year! But we’ll still send out a What To Do on the 5th, ‘til then all the best for a wonderful 2012!

It’s a quiet week around the Lower Mainland, as many of us are staying home and spending time with loved ones. But there are some nice family events happening for New Year’s Eve, including a couple of early countdown events for the young ones. There’s also a storytelling event, and of course, it’s Polar Bear Swim weekend. We’ve also added several New Year’s swims and skates to our listing of holiday skates, swims, walks and other physical activities, and updated our holiday trains, lights, and other ongoing events listings so you can see at a glance which ones are still running. If you are celebrating the New Year this weekend, we wish you a fun evening, and the very best for the year to come.

The kids are off school and excitement builds in the air as we count down the last few days before Christmas. There are many ongoing Christmas happenings, but the craft fair season has run its course, and many organizations are closed for a Christmas break. But the River District and Science World have you covered for keeping kids active. You can also still catch one of many theatre and pantomime productions around the city. And of course, we’re updating our holiday events guides as fast as we can!

Please note: This is your last yoyo until December 29th, when we’ll be sending out a New Years What To Do! And we’ll be doing something we’ve never done before in 2012, taking a week (almost) off. That’s right, we’ll be taking the first week of January to recharge our editorial batteries and get organized for a great year! But we’ll still send out a What To Do that week too. Happy Holidays to all, we hope you have a wonderful time with your families and friends!

Well, it’s almost “the most wonderful time of the year” whether we’re ready or not (how’s that shopping list?), so this weekend is pretty quiet as far as events go. There are still a few things happening in T.O., including the fun Alice in BLUNDERland pantomime, Disney On Ice, and the annual Christmas Treats Walk at the Zoo on Boxing Day. And you can always check out our ongoing holiday fun guide if you need some more seasonal inspiration.

Together with another family we’ve made a Christmas Pantomime outing a tradition for a number of years. This year we went a little further afield and headed out to catch The Sword and the Stone at the Surrey Arts Centre, from the Royal Canadian Theatre and Artistic Director Ellie King.

We’re headed into a big week, including the last weekend before Christmas, the Winter Solstice, and the beginning of Hanukah. There’s much to see and do, including many opportunities to connect and celebrate with your friends and neighbours. Five Vancouver communities are hosting Solstice celebrations, as is the city of Port Moody. There are Hanukah celebrations and activities including the Chanukah Carnival in Richmond and A Hanukkah Celebration in Vancouver. If you are looking to enjoy nature, there is the monthly Walk Richmond, Treetop Tales in North Vancouver, and Nature In My Backyard in Surrey. And there are fun performances and lots of opportunities to shop, too. Wow!

The weather is certainly getting chilly, but we’re still waiting for the white stuff to arrive here in T.O.! With school winding down and the holidays nearly here, you may be looking to get out and enjoy the city with the family…without visiting yet another shopping centre. Take in any number of holiday productions (Joseph, Puppets, and Sleeping Beauty, oh my!) and concerts, shop local artisans at St. Lawrence Market, go back in time with traditional holiday festivities at one of T.O.’s historic museums or sites, or lace up the skates and head to Evergreen Brick Works for an outdoor active family afternoon. And if you’re looking for ongoing holiday fun happening in the city, check out our happy holiday guide.

going varsity

A few weeks ago we took the kids out for a Thunderbirds basketball double header (women’s and men’s teams) at UBC, and what a great family night out!

We’re ashamed to admit that when the Grizzlies left town we mourned the loss of live games and never gave a thought to the university teams – big mistake! Consequently, our kids (ages 5 and 8) had never seen a live basketball game until then. As we watched them watching the game we quickly remembered it’s so much fun live –especially for kids’ shorter attention spans—as it’s such a fast game with something happening at all times. And that night there was lots to cheer about as the women’s team pulled off a fabulous “come from behind” win, and the men led from start to finish.

December may be the darkest month of the year, but there is no shortage of happenings to brighten your weekends. You can catch a live performance of The Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music, brush up your knowledge with the Faraday Science Show, or get some tips on getting some much needed sleep from a registered occupational therapist. If you want to head outside, there is a Young Naturalists’ Club meeting or a bird walk in Richmond. There are dozens of holiday events, all detailed on our blog, of which we’ve sampled a few below. It’s also the start of the lead up to Solstice celebrations, and you can help build a communal lantern to light the night. Whatever you choose we wish you happiness, warmth and light this weekend!
