5 tips for smarter grocery shopping

Grocery shopping doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore! We know grocery stores get crowded, life is busy, and food is expensive. But, with a little planning, your grocery shops can be more efficient, more healthful, and more cost-effective. Here are five tips to hone your shopping skills for better, smarter grocery shops.

1. Make a list and stick to it

The very best way to overspend at the grocery store is to shop without a list. Before you head to the market, make a simple meal plan and a grocery list. We like to format our grocery list in the order we go through the aisles in the store, so produce is grouped together, as are deli meats and cheeses, butcher items, bakery items, dairy items, and miscellaneous grocery items. This means we aren’t circling back because we forgot to grab broccoli (saves time) and we aren’t buying anything off the list because it’s on sale or looks particularly tasty (saves money).

2. Check flyers for deals

We used to pull out all the flyers from our local paper, clip coupons, circle deals, and write everything down. It was a process to say the least. Now our deal searching procedure is simpler and much more streamlined. We’ve been using the YP Grocery, an awesome grocery list app that grabs the best deals from our favourite grocery stores. It’s super simple to use and will definitely save you time and money! Here’s how to use it in three easy steps:

  1. Select your favourite grocery stores: YP Grocery has a huge list of all of the local grocery stores and markets.
  2. Create your shopping list: We keep our staple items on the list all the time – these are the things we buy at every shop, like bananas or milk and then we add in any other items we’re shopping for that week.
  3. Find the best deals: Once we’ve entered our shopping list, YP Grocery does all of the heavy lifting. The app scans the flyers from our favourite shops and shows all of the deals that can be had from the current and upcoming flyers. It makes it really easy to comparison shop! Then we add the deals to our shopping list and head to the store.

For even more money savings, you can also clip and save coupons right in the YP Grocery app. Then when at participating retailers simply show your coupon on the app and watch the savings add up.

3. Try online shopping

Many grocery stores in Canada are now offering online shopping. You can have your groceries delivered to your doorstep or you can swing by the store to pick them up on your way home from work or from dropping the kids off at school. We approach shopping online exactly like heading to the grocery store — we make our list, check on deals, and then start our shop. You’ll find you’ll save a ton of time since you aren’t wandering the aisles. Plus, you can shop in your pajamas!

4. Keep a list on your fridge

When we notice one of our staples is running low, we add it to a list we have stuck to the side of our fridge, and then we check the list when we are planning our grocery-shopping trip. Don’t wait until you are totally out of an ingredient to add it to your list! This saves us from multiple trips to the grocery store in a week for just one or two items, saving time and money.

5. Avoid peak shopping times

When you go to the grocery store, make sure to avoid peak times. It may vary slightly from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, but certainly any weekday around 5 pm – 6 pm is the busiest. Weekends can get crazy too. We like to go on the weekday evenings, after dinner. It means it’s easier to find parking, the aisles aren’t crowded with carts, and you don’t have to wait in line at the cashier forever, which can save a ton of time and frustration. The leisurely pace of an evening grocery shop means we can inspect labels and compare prices between brands, which can help with our money saving goals.

Armed with these helpful tips, your grocery shopping trips will now be a breeze!

Presented by YP Grocery

YP Grocery is the fastest and most convenient way to save in grocery stores and pharmacies, period. Most shopping apps are in fact just a bunch of digitized grocery flyers. Ours is different. We’re a grocery list app. That means that the user (that’s you!) lists every product they need and YP Grocery does all the work: It combs through every current flyer for savings and grocery coupons. Now, of course, you still can browse grocery flyers manually. But that does seem like a waste of time now, doesn’t it? That’s not all! YP Grocery comes loaded with amazing features: shareable and collaborative grocery lists, a filtering tool to search only in the stores you like, a fidelity cards holder, and many more to come!
