awesome shows for kids at the vancouver international children’s festival

The Vancouver International Children’s Festival is right around the corner! This annual Festival is something our whole family looks forward to every year. This year they are celebrating their 40th Festival, so they are pulling out all the stops to make it the best Festival yet. The shows run from May 29th to June 4th on Granville Island and feature theatrical performances, puppetry, storytelling, circus acts, and dance performances too — something for every kid!

To celebrate the 40th Festival there are three brand new awesome events. On May 28th you are invited to a birthday party, complete with cake, ice cream, face-painting, and fun games. On June 3rd, join Fred Penner and his friends on stage for an unforgettable show highlighting the best-loved children’s singers in Canada. And on June 4th, get your sing-along voices ready for an epic Charlotte Diamond performance (this show is now sold out). Make sure to grab your tickets now, before the other shows sell out too!

One fun way to enjoy the Festival are the pyjama nights and evening shows. Put on your favourite PJs and head down to Granville Island for a special 6:30 pm show, including the always awesome Variety Show, hosted this year by Fred Penner. Tickets for two of the shows, the Fred Penner performance on May 30th and Grug the Rainbow on May are only $11!

In addition to these cool events, there are a ton of fabulous and extraordinarily talented performers from around the world putting on spectacular shows throughout the Festival. Here are just a few you can see this year.

Grug and the Rainbow
This is children’s theatre at its best. Curious little Grug will fascinate you and your kids as you join him on an adventure to capture a rainbow. You’ll giggle and laugh along with the rest of the audience while the puppet masters work their magic on stage. The sets may be simple, but the show is absolutely gorgeous. This show is designed for kids ages 3 – 7.

A Heart in Winter (Le coeur en hiver)
This show is based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale, The Snow Queen. You’ll follow along on Gerda’s epic journey in search of her missing friend, Kay. Will she find him and save him from the Snow Queen? You’ll be at the edge of your seat as puppet masters and actors bring the story to life. This lovely show is performed in English and en français. Perfect for kids ages 5 and up.

The Canada Show
“The complete history of Canada — without all the boring stuff!” Complete with a dancing beaver, a Mr. Dressup tribute, lots of hockey jerseys, puppets infected with scurvy, and more! This hilariously fast-paced adventure will have you clapping along and dancing in your seat. It’s the perfect way to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, eh! Best for ages 7 and up.

This unique show is for the youngest members of your family. This stimulating and interactive show was designed just for them! Through the language of music and movement, wooden blocks become an ever-changing landscape, full of captivating shapes, sounds, movements, and endless possibilities. This unique experience is for kids aged 0 – 3 and their parents.
