Follow your child’s wandering curiosity at Winter Wander 2017 in Vanier Park on Saturday, February 4th from 10 am – 5 pm. Families can explore the Museum of Vancouver, Macmillan Space Centre, Vancouver Maritime Museum, Vancouver Archives and Vancouver Academy of Music for just $5 a person with children 5 and under free. This event is an opportunity for Vanier Park to offer its culturally rich institutions to the community in an accessible way. Children can soak some science, history and art and parents might find a new favourite weekend destination.
Along with the venues’ regular exhibitions, enjoy Bard on the Beach performances by the Young Shakesperians, music from students at the Vancouver Academy of Music and storytelling by the Vancouver Public Library. Once everyone has wandered up an appetite, grab lunch or a snack from local food trucks and take in the beautiful park views.
Here’s a snippet of what you can expect at participating venues:
The Museum of Vancouver:
Interactive exhibitions tell Vancouver’s story through the last century. Listen to Vancouver’s 70’s bands, pose for streetcar photography in the ‘50s, learn about Vancouver’s role in Boom, Bust and War times, and discover the ancestral village of the Musqueam First Nation. Kids can also learn to fold origami and follow a wild migration map of Canada.
MacMillan Space Centre:
Check out the exhibit space, watch live science shows and explore space in the Planetarium Star Theatre. Observatory tours will also be offered.
Vancouver Maritime Museum:
For the nautically inclined, view a new exhibit celebrating Captain Vancouver’s voyage to Valparaiso in 1795 that spurred cultural exchange between Canada and Chile. Then browse the 15,000 objects and over 100,000 images in their collection!
For little detectives or history buffs, the Vancouver Archives holds a fascinating history, carefully preserved in personal and public documents dating back to Vancouver’s incorporation in 1886. If some family members prefer locomotion to information, they can step into the parking lot for a game of ball hockey.
Vancouver Academy of Music:
From 2-4pm, VAM is hosting Strawberries and Tea where students will be performing music and tea and strawberries will be served to guests.
Winter Wander is a rare chance for families to enjoy the science, music, history and performance art that Vanier Park is known for in a fun and affordable way. Purchase your tickets on the day of the event from the Museum of Vancouver, H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, or Vancouver Maritime Museum.
