We recently visited the Centre to take a tour and get a lesson in all things bee! The brave beekeepers will amaze you with bee trivia (did you know worker bees only live for 45 days?) while they opened up a real honeybee colony. You may even get to see the queen bee! We lucked out on our latest tour; Bee Master John scoured the hive until he found her in the bottom brood chamber. Can you spot her in this picture? Hint – she’s long and black and Bee Master John is pointing right at her!
There are lots of hands on activities and games to explore after the demonstration, and we got to do a honey taste-test. There’s something about tasting honey straight from the hive that makes it that much better!
All that activity will work up an appetite so thank goodness the brand new Fry’s Corner Beestro at the Honeybee Centre is now open. The honey-inspired menu features fresh salads, grilled paninis and delicious homemade soups. For a lighter healthy snack, we loved the Honey and Yogurt Parfait topped with homemade granola. The Grilled Cheese with sliced apples and cinnamon honey yogurt dip and the honey peach lemonade was definitely a fave with the kiddos. Yum!
The Honeybee Centre is also hosting their Annual Honeybee Festival on July 25th and 26th from 10am – 4pm. This bee-centric event features a local artisans’ market, beekeeping demonstrations, bee beards (yes you read that right) and an interactive kids zone. Plus admission is totally free! Be sure to add this to your calendar for a day of family-friendly fun. You can even help name their new mascot! What do you think her name should bee?
The Honeybee Centre is located at 7480 176 Street, Surrey. You can visit their website or call 604.575.2337 (BEES) for more information.
