The 12 Wines of Christmas: Contest

Drink wine. This is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.

We’re toasting 12 days of wine with our friends at Okanagan Crush Pad and when the last sip has been swallowed one of you will win the dozen. We will feature a bottle from the Summerland winery for each of the next 12 days along with the perfect holiday occasion to clink glasses over. Be sure to read on for details on how to enter at the bottom of this post!

Okanagan Crush Pad develops wines that are distinctly Okanagan, celebrating the extraordinary beauty and growing conditions of its vineyards. In addition to their flagship wines, Haywire and Bartier Scholefield, and in-house client winery Bartier Bros., Okanagan Crush Pad makes wine for prospective winery owners and lends its expertise through the entire process, from vineyard to market. winiersIf you’ve dreamed of waking up to a view of your own vineyard, start here. With a lifetime of experience between them, these people know what they’re doing.

Co- owner Christine Coletta (pictured top) was instrumental in the establishment of the VQA program and a veteran marketer for dozens of B.C.’s best wines. She has joined forces with Okanagan native and chief winemaker, Michael Bartier (pictured middle), who has developed offerings at some of Okanagan’s finest houses, including See Ya Later Ranch, Road 13 and Stag’s Hollow. David Scholefield (pictured bottom), a known expert in the wine industry, is the Okanagan Crush Pad “ambassador” and inspiration for the winery’s business model. These are just a few members of the robust Okanagan Crush Pad team.

Bottoms up!

BS-Rose2010The First Wine of Christmas: Best Wine for Present Wrapping

The shopping is done and presents lay strewn across the bedroom floor waiting to be adorned in ribbons, bows and shiny paper. We like to crank the carols and crack a bottle of Bartier Scholefield Rosé to turn this chore into a crafty afternoon. This rose is a deep strawberry red and tastes of cherry pie with strapping acidity. The wine will look as beautiful in your glass as the gifts at your feet, and is bold enough to drink with a snack of olives and roasted nuts as you wrap.

BS-Rose2010The Second Wine of Christmas: Best Wine for Your Cookie Exchange

We’re serving a few golden glasses of Haywire Gewürztraminer at this year’s cookie exchange. It’s a happy addition to all the chewy, crunchy, nutty, and (as our little ones astutely say) nummy treats. This aromatic wine is perfect for sampling something sweet and has a crisp refreshing finish that offers a welcome repose between sugary confections. We like gingerbread or any other spiced cookies to best complement the grapefruit and floral aromas that fill the glass. So pull out your aprons, polish your wine glasses and get baking!

BS-Rose2010The Third Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for a Hostess Gift

A wine for your hostess should be party-worthy now and special enough to save for a future occasion. We’re gifting the BS Sauvignon Blanc for our holiday soirees. This wine is fresh and fragrant with aromas of mandarin and grapefruit amidst freshly cut grass. Yes, it tastes as romantic as it sounds. Plus, it’s a keeper. This bottle will fare well for the next 10 years, growing more graceful and complex. When your hostess pulls the cork and pours a glass you will be remembered as the perfect party guest.

BS-Rose2010The Fourth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Tree Trimming

The tree is (kinda) straight, we’ve hauled out the boxes of ornaments and fumbled through unraveling the lights. Time to uncork a bottle of BS Red! This juicy wine is as refreshing as your freshly trimmed tree and has hints of berry and clove, making it particularly festive. Between sips, we’ll be hanging our favourite ornaments with our kids and reminiscing on Christmases past. When the last bobble has been placed, we like to drink in the warm glow of our tree and the last drops in our glass while winter howls outside.

BS-Rose2010The Fifth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Watching a Christmas Classic

Whether it’s A Christmas Carol, the Grinch, Miracle on 34th Street or the Sound of Music there’s nothing quite as comforting as your favourite Christmas classic. Except maybe Bartier Bros. Merlot. The combination is like being wrapped in a warm blanket of nostalgia and indulgence. This full bodied red is big in every way, with concentrated aromas of blackberry, cherries and smooth toffee. We like to pop a big bowl of popcorn, sip a glass and mouth all the lines we know. The kids find it very annoying.

BB-2012BRChardonnayThe Sixth Wine of Christmas: Best Wine for a Holiday Lunch with Friends

Good friends commiserate when you can’t tolerate another tantrum; buy coffee for you when your wallet is misplaced (again); and know how to tickle your funny bone. So treat them to something special!

We’re celebrating our exceptional friends with an equally exceptional wine and midday feast. On pour is Bartier Bros. Barrel Fermented Chardonnay. This full bodied wine has aromas of tropical fruit, caramel, and a mineral note akin to wet stone. Each sip is soft and luxurious – a perfect companion for lingering conversations. We like a menu of smoked meats, scallops or wild mushroom risotto to bring out the best in this wine and our guests.

Haywire-Syrah2012The Seventh Wine of Christmas: Best Wine After a Winter Walk

The Haywire Syrah will warm your body and your soul after an evening of caroling or looking at lights. A bite from Jack Frost begs for a bold red that spreads to your fingers and toes and this Syrah does just the trick. Flavours are both juicy and peppery with a long earthy finish that makes you sink deeper in your chair. We’ll be pouring a glass (or two) when the scarves are unraveled, the boots kicked off, and the kiddos are settled with some hot cocoa.

BS-Rose2010The Eighth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Surviving the In-laws

We love our families, but the holidays can have us seeing a LOT of each other. To keep things civilized, we’re chilling a bottle of Haywire Pinot Gris for an afternoon tipple when 5 o’clock can’t come fast enough. With vibrant tastes of citrus, and notes of sweet and savoury herbs this wine is delicious on its own – a quality we like in a survival wine – or served with shellfish or roast chicken. Bunking with family in tight quarters can add to the weight of holiday stress and make anyone feel on edge. It’s nice to take a breath, share some wine and remember why you actually love these people.

BS-Rose2010The Ninth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Christmas Eve Dinner

Our dinner table will be punctuated with bottles of BS White to wash down a briney seafood feast. Eating seafood on Christmas Eve is based on an old Roman Catholic tradition to abstain from meat products on the Eve of certain holidays. Regardless of its origin, slurping back oysters and cracking crab is both luxurious and casual. Highlighted by swallows of a crisp white with notes of peach and zesty lime, this is a practice in abstinence that anyone could get on board with.

BS-Rose2010The Tenth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Christmas Dinner

We’ve carefully selected Bartier Bros. The Goal from our cellar (a.k.a. the pantry) for Christmas dinner. We think a Christmas wine should be as rich as the food, exceptional on its own, and affordable enough to serve several bottles to an over-populated dinner table. The Goal scores on all fronts. This full bodied wine is elegant, bright, and complex with red berry characters, slightly gripping tannins and just enough acidity to be refreshing. It mingles perfectly with turkey and all the ‘appropriate’ fixings (each family knows what they are). And with a price point under $30, you won’t need to be shrewd with a refill … that’s never appreciated anyway.

Price: $29.90

BS-Rose2010The Eleventh Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for Boxing Day Lunch

We crave a crunchy salad on Boxing Day to temper a night of indulgence. But since it is a holiday after all, we’ll be pairing it with a bottle of Bartier Bros. Semillon. This medium bodied wine is bright and complex with soft flavours of peach, dried apricot and earth. To absorb all the delicate nuances, enjoy with a light lunch. Instead of the usual sandwiches (we’ll have those for dinner) consider using leftover turkey for an unconventional Cobb and whisk a little cranberry sauce into the vinaigrette. Let’s toast to another Christmas under our belts, whether barely survived or a roaring success.

BS-Rose2010The Twelfth Wine Of Christmas: Best Wine for New Year’s Eve

Bubbly! What else? We’ll be popping bottles of Haywire The Bub and having a fizzy toast to the year ahead. Refreshingly clean and crisp, this wine bursts with cool green apple that dances on your tongue. What’s more, it will bring brightness and laughter to your New Year’s celebration – the benchmark of a good sparkling wine. And if you are in need of a midnight snack, try chef Roger Planiden’s suggestion of mixing extra virgin olive oil with a drop of truffle oil and drizzling it on fresh salted popcorn. The combination is simple yet sumptuous.
