This Sunday it’s the 85th Academy Awards and our resident music maven, Pamela Francis, has a playlist to help the grey days of February a touch more glamourous for you and your little ones. So why not dress up in your fanciest frocks and spiffiest suits, and host your own red carpet fashion show, accompanied by these tunes? The more lavish and colourful, the better!
Star Wars: Main Theme (John Williams) – what better way to kick off an Oscar-worthy celebration than with the stirring theme from the world’s most popular sci-fi franchise? Jedi knight wannabes will love it.
March from the River Kwai (Mitch Miller) – this one might be more familiar among the grandparents, but we defy you not to start whistling along and tapping your toes.
Flashdance…What a Feelin’ (Irene Cara) – more like a flashback to legwarmers and ripped sweatshirts, but what’s not to love about this 1980’s classic dance tune?
Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (B.J. Thomas) – while “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” doesn’t feature on any parental-approved viewing list that we know of, the likelihood of it raining on Sunday makes this 1969 Oscar winner a no-brainer.
Can You Feel The Love Tonight (Elton John) – 1994 was a big year for this Disney classic, and Elton John was nominated for three of five Original Songs. The winner is a true heart warmer.
Over the Rainbow (Judy Garland) – scary flying monkeys aside, it’s hard to believe that this perennial favourite will be celebrating its 75th anniversary next year.
James Bond Theme (John Barry) – speaking of anniversaries, we’re jumping on the Bond Bandwagon to celebrating his 50th with the tune that started it all. There’s nothing quite like the twang of this 1960’s guitar ditty to inspire future spies.
(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life (Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes) – while it’s taken us almost this long to get this 1987 winner out of our heads, nobody puts Baby in the corner!
You can listen to all of these favourites on our Grooveshark playlist. Hopefully this list motivates you and your kidlets to get moving and into the awards season mood. And remember, it’s an honour just to be nominated!
