vancouver: what to do, what to do?

It’s cold all around the Lower Mainland this weekend, with many communities blanketed in snow. So it’s a perfect time for fun indoor events, like the Royal City Kids Fair, the Early Years Childcare Fair, or a free family movie. Brave souls can head outdoors for a nature walk at Pacific Spirit Park, or learn the stories of winter plants at Van Dusen Gardens. It’s also the beginning of Chinese New Year, and you can do crafts to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon.

While the rain and mild temperatures (for January) are making it feel more like spring in the GTA, there are still some fun winter events to partake in! Grab the family and head to the High Park Nature Centre to enjoy a winter tree walk, or fundraise for your chance to skate with the Toronto Maple Leafs while also helping others. If you’re looking for an indoor activity, Harbourfront is the scene of LunarFest, a celebration of the Year Of The Dragon; the Science Centre has fun for the kiddos with marbling workshops; and Robbie Burns’ Day is sure to add some fun culture to the weekend. Happy weekend, Toronto!

ski season

While we should be blanketed in snow by now, things are still fairly (disconcertingly) green in the GTA. But the snow is coming (we promised our snow-angel loving kiddo yesterday, so it’d better be), which means we can shine up the skis and get ready to hit the slopes.

for the love of reading

This month, children in kindergarten start bringing independent reading books home. While the kids we’ve talked to seem thrilled, some parents are feeling stressed about how to help their child learn to read. So we turned to Dr. Christianne Hayward, founder of the Lyceum of Literature and Art, for some tips. Christianne has a PhD focused on children’s literature curriculums, teaches at post-secondary institutions, and has been running her parent/youth bookclubs (preschool-grade 12) since 1996.

It’s shaping up to be a great looking weekend in the Lower Mainland. The forecast is calling for cloudy weather, which will be a nice break from the rain. So it’s a good time to head out on a nature walk at Maplewood’s Tidal Flats, head to the Ecology Centre for Rainforest Rambles, or catch Rascally Raccoons at the Stanley Park Nature House. If you’d like to stay inside, you can check out Luminescence, which has been extended (yay!), or catch a movie in a baby-friendly theatre. Further afield, you can head to It’s My Wedding or get some exercise with the Chilly Chase. It’s always fun at Place des Arts Family Day, and older kids will enjoy the Skate, Movie and Pizza Night. Whatever you choose, we hope you enjoy your weekend and we hope the weather forecasts are right so we can leave our umbrellas at home!

After the first full week back to school for most Toronto kiddos, you may be looking for a way to inject some fun into the weekend. And while the city is still waking up to the New Year, there are certainly a few ways to shake off the back-to-school blues. See your favourite Disney characters live on stage; get in the winter spirit with some igloo building; partake in the fun of Chinese New Year celebrations at the ROM; or enjoy all things boating and get a taste for summer at the International Boat Show.

One of the things we love about the new year is the opportunity to “start fresh.” And one of our ‘fresh’ ideas this year is to save money on our grocery bills. No matter how organized we think we are with our meal planning, we continue to be stunned by the amount we spend on groceries every month. So we decided to develop a frugal nature and seek out some deals using Grocery Alerts.
