hey macaron-a
Filed Under Mamas Rock, Places | January 31, 2012
When it comes to baked goods we carry no cultural allegiance. French, Dutch, German, Canadian, or Italian…we eat them all. So when we were tipped to a new pastry destination in Coal Harbour a bit off the beaten path, we thought it was high time we got our macaron on at Soirette.
Soirette is the second child of mum, biomedical engineer, and Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry Chef Shobna Kannusamy. After Shobna had her first child she evidently wasn’t busy enough, so she gave birth to a patisserie. Her tiny little jewel box of a shop is filled with delicate macarons that look too pretty to be eaten, and with aromas of exotic teas.

knights in shining armour

While Toronto is well known for Casa Loma, it’s also home to another castle of sorts: Medieval Times. And it’s one with knights, horses, sword fights, cheering, jeering, jousting, and family fun at its best.
Located on the CNE grounds, Toronto’s Medieval Times is the only one in Canada (there are multiple U.S. locations). It’s essentially dinner theatre for families, inspired by the feasts and tournaments of the 11th century. Visitors enjoy a four-course banquet meal while they cheer on one of six Knights competing for victory. This is not “watch and be quiet” kind of theatre. In fact, the louder you are, the better.

Can you get through a whole dinner party without somebody googling something by dessert? We can’t. The accessibility of information has fuelled our insatiable need to know, or, more often, to verify crazy facts right now. But for our kids we recognize that computers, tablets, smart phones, and such are primarily entertainment. Sure, it’s easy to download a few apps and let them have a go at it, but as they grow older we’d really love them to appreciate the internet as a source of learning. So we’re trying to introduce some more knowledge-based online content.

We have a confession to make. We have a library addiction. We loved the storytimes when our wee ones were babes in arms and toddling terrors. We think librarians are sexy, and we can’t believe there is a place where we can get so many books to read…for free (except for those pesky library fines [...]
every cloud has a silver lining – spring break musings
Filed Under Favourites, Places | January 24, 2012
We’re all about the silver linings here. And one of the unintended consequences of the move to a two-week spring break in Vancouver due to District Closure days is there is far more choice for Spring Break camps than there used to be.

With our recent weather that could almost be classified as “spring like”, some of the usual kid pastimes like snow fort building and sledding are on hold until we get more of the white stuff. So we thought it was a good time for a road trip outside the city, to a place that will get everyone, well, outside: Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

we know where the lions are
As the winter days seesaw from absolutely freezing and snowy, to warm and wet, we’re finding ourselves a bit challenged by keeping our kids engaged because no matter how much they love sledding, they get cold fast. So once you’ve topped them up with hot chocolate – also an excellent antidote to soggy, cool days – why not set them to work drawing a lion? Or set them loose on Draw Me A Lion’s lovely art projects, which are all about colouring, drawing, writing, cutting, gluing and more.
