toronto: what to do, what to do?
With the holidays still in full swing (and school out for another week for most), there’s still plenty of fun to be had in T.O. despite things more quiet on the events front. Bake some old-fashioned gingerbread cookies at historic Fort York; visit the ROM or the Science Centre for some family fun; take in a family-friendly New Year’s celebration at the Zoo; or brave the chilly Beaches water for charity. And you can always check out our ongoing holiday fun guide if you need some more seasonal inspiration.
Just a reminder: we’ll be taking the first week of January to recharge our editorial batteries and get organized for a great year! But we’ll still send out a What To Do on the 5th, ‘til then all the best for a wonderful 2012!

vancouver: what to do, what to do?

It’s a quiet week around the Lower Mainland, as many of us are staying home and spending time with loved ones. But there are some nice family events happening for New Year’s Eve, including a couple of early countdown events for the young ones. There’s also a storytelling event, and of course, it’s Polar Bear Swim weekend. We’ve also added several New Year’s swims and skates to our listing of holiday skates, swims, walks and other physical activities, and updated our holiday trains, lights, and other ongoing events listings so you can see at a glance which ones are still running. If you are celebrating the New Year this weekend, we wish you a fun evening, and the very best for the year to come.

The kids are off school and excitement builds in the air as we count down the last few days before Christmas. There are many ongoing Christmas happenings, but the craft fair season has run its course, and many organizations are closed for a Christmas break. But the River District and Science World have you covered for keeping kids active. You can also still catch one of many theatre and pantomime productions around the city. And of course, we’re updating our holiday events guides as fast as we can!
Please note: This is your last yoyo until December 29th, when we’ll be sending out a New Years What To Do! And we’ll be doing something we’ve never done before in 2012, taking a week (almost) off. That’s right, we’ll be taking the first week of January to recharge our editorial batteries and get organized for a great year! But we’ll still send out a What To Do that week too. Happy Holidays to all, we hope you have a wonderful time with your families and friends!

Well, it’s almost “the most wonderful time of the year” whether we’re ready or not (how’s that shopping list?), so this weekend is pretty quiet as far as events go. There are still a few things happening in T.O., including the fun Alice in BLUNDERland pantomime, Disney On Ice, and the annual Christmas Treats Walk at the Zoo on Boxing Day. And you can always check out our ongoing holiday fun guide if you need some more seasonal inspiration.

gifts that give the whole year long

We love giving gifts. Finding the perfect toy, book or knick-knack for the loved ones on our list fills us with unending delight. Sometimes though, as great as a thing might be, it’s the gifts that keep on giving that truly fill their hearts with joy.

Together with another family we’ve made a Christmas Pantomime outing a tradition for a number of years. This year we went a little further afield and headed out to catch The Sword and the Stone at the Surrey Arts Centre, from the Royal Canadian Theatre and Artistic Director Ellie King.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned as parents, it’s that kids lose stuff. And if we’ve forgotten to (diligently) label, marker up, or sew on a name patch, that stuff could be lost for good. Which is why we love Admiral Road Designs – no label maker required!

an appetite for christmas
When there are kids in the house, the last week before Christmas has an energy all its own. There’s an appetite for festive 24/7, and we find we’d rather feed that than risk self-combustion! At the same time, we’re trying to finish off baking/shopping/work which means we can’t dedicate the whole day to holiday outings. [...]
