We’re definitely ramping up for the holiday season in the Lower Mainland, and there are craft fairs, performances, and sales galore. It’s also Neighbourhood Toy Store Day, and several local toy stores invite you to come out so they can “wow” you. If you’d like to get outside, drop in on the Young Naturalist Club in Lynn Canyon, or check out the Coho Salmon spawning on Little Campbell River. There’s also a fun, adults-only book signing, and a great family movie night. The always fun Yo Gabba Gabba! Live show is back, and the Evergreen Cultural Centre has a real treat in store, featuring the Sursaut Dance Company. Whatever your mood this weekend, there’s lots of fun activities to choose from!

The weekend fun in Toronto is picking up again! For the curious inventors in your brood, head to the Science Centre for the Rediscovering da Vinci exhibit. If dramatic arts and music are more your scene, check out Mary Poppins at The Princess Of Wales Theatre, Ali Baba at Solar Stage, SEUSSICAL™ the musical, or a Music & Truffles show for kids. Sports fans will love the Hockey Hall Of Fame festivities, and the whole family will benefit from a special bullying-awareness musical just for kids, to celebrate the start of anti-bullying week (November 16th – 20th). If you’re not too tired after all the fun, get a head start on holiday shopping at the Neighbourhood Toy Store Day. Good luck with your calendars this weekend!

in remembrance

As November 11th approaches, many of us will gather to remember and honour those who served for us during times of war. Originally commemorating the end of World War I, Remembrance Day is also a time to honour those who’ve served in the many conflicts since then, those who’ve served here at home, and those who are currently serving. There are several Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Vancouver and around the Lower Mainland, and there are some other events that honour our soldiers, what we’ve fought, and what we’ve won. Here’s a list of all the November 11th Remembrance Day events we’ve found:

lest we forget

Every November 11th Torontonians, along with others around the world, gather to commemorate, honour and remember those who made sacrifices during war times. Remembrance Day, the 11th day of the 11th month, marks the end of World War I, and reinforces hope for the peaceful world we want to pass on to future generations. The city runs a number of ceremonies throughout the GTA, and other organizations also hold events. Oh and we love the fact that there’s an app for that, yes there’s a Canadian Remembrance Day iPhone App listing ceremonies near you and more. Here’s a list of public Remembrance Day ceremonies you can attend in the GTA:

Did you know a flamingo can eat only when its head is upside down? Weird, but true. We have a real fondness for our kids telling us crazy facts they’ve learned, and National Geographic Kids magazine provides them lots of fodder. Cool inventions, movie and book reviews, world records, globetrotting adventures, and incredible nuggets of animal trivia, this 10 issues a year mag is a veritable treasure trove for curious kids. Plus, subscriptions come by mail, and it seems to be one of those universal truths that all kids LOVE mail.

Halloween is over (and we hope you had a great one!) and the season of shopping has begun. The always popular Circle Craft Christmas Market starts this weekend, as does the Place des Arts Christmas Boutique. In your local communities, there are several church and community centre fall fairs, and more than a sprinkling of kids stuff swap meets. If you aren’t looking to shop, you can check out the nature walks, enjoy some live music with the Music with Marnie Band, or catch a showing of The Wizard Of Oz. There’s also a skate night, a family movie night, and a PJ story time. So much fun, so little time: which events will you choose? Whichever suits your fancy, we hope you have fun!

Things are quieter in the city this weekend (a welcome break for some after last weekend’s ghost and goblin craziness!), but there’s still plenty of family fun to be had. If your kiddos didn’t get their fill of Halloween hoots, you can check out Harbourfront’s Day Of The Dead Festival. Or head over to Exhibition Place to take in a day (or more!) of the annual Royal Agriculture Winter Fair. Kids can also get their creative on with a visit to NFB Mediatheque in downtown T.O., where they’ll enjoy animation workshops. Happy November (can you believe it?)!

As our kiddos (and us) recover from Halloween and swag bags brimming with mini chocolates, candies and sweets, we take a bit of a serious turn as it’s now November and National Diabetes Awareness Month. More than three million Canadians have some form of diabetes, and over 300,000 Canadians live with Type 1 diabetes. Type [...]
