Okay, so while you’re unlikely to eat your Halloween pumpkin once it’s past its prime, you can always roast the seeds before tossing the carved orange orb into the compost. And super fresh pumpkins are best for carving and seed roasting, so try to hit up a local patch. To give you a hand, we’ve complimented our Halloween events listings from last week with a handy list of local pumpkin patches. We’ve gone a bit farther afield than usual with this list because, well, there just aren’t that many pumpkin patches right in the city. All patches are organized alphabetically:

Aldor Acres Pumpkin Patch
Sunday, September 25th – Monday, October 31st, 9 am – 5 pm, Aldor Acres, 24990 – 84th Avenue, Langley
Pick a pumpkin or two, partake in a hay ride, check out the farmyard animals, and don’t forget the Pumpkin Fun Run on October 16th. Admission: $7: www.aldoracres.com

Apple Barn Pumpkin Farm Limited
ongoing, Monday – Saturday, 9 am – 5:30 pm & Sundays, 11 am – 5 pm, 333 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford
In addition to pumpkins you’ll also find a jumping pillow, petting barn, bunny town, slides, a playground, a bouncy barn, and corn maze, plus hay rides and pony rides on the weekend. And they also have Apple U-Pick at 270 Gladwin. Kids under 2 are free, and kids aged 3 – 16 pay $6.50: www.applebarn.ca

Cloverdale Country Farms Pumpkin Patch
Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st, 10 am – 4:30 pm, Highway 10 & 168 Street, Surrey
Not only is there a pumpkin patch maze, a hay bale maze, U-pick pumpkins, and a bouncy castle, but your $4 admission includes the hay maze and a pumpkin of your choice. Adults, please bring a non-perishable food donation for the Surrey Food Bank: www.cloverdalecountryfarms.com

Laity Pumpkin Patch
Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st, Weekdays 1:30 pm – 5 pm, Weekends 9:30 am – 5 pm, Maple Ridge (see site for directions)
This pumpkin patch takes things to the next level! It includes a corn maze, frontier town, wooden animals, fairy tale trails, dinosaurs, a pumpkin zoo, mushroom forest, and more. Admission is $4, and kids under 2 are free: www.laitypumpkinpatch.com

Maan Farms Pumpkin Patch
Saturday, September 10th – Monday, October 31st, (Monday to Sunday), 9 am – 6 pm, 790 McKenzie Road, Abbotsford
Maan farms grows 25 of the most popular varieties of pumpkins (who  knew there were that many? Not us!). Your kids will enjoy the Critter Corral and Kidz Corral, while you take advantage of the Country Market. Admission to the pumpkin patch is free and there is a cost for the corrals, but darned if we can figure out what it is: www.maanfarms.com

Petey’s Pumpkin Patch
Friday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st, 11 am – 4 pm, 9423 Gibson Road, Chilliwack
It’s pumpkin patch plus with a fun maze, a family fun zone, train or wagon rides out the patch, and a not-too-scary boo tour of Reapers. And on October 31st, they host a great big boo with trick or treats. Admission – $7/person, or $24 for a family of four: www.ffinc.ca

Pumpkin Patch At Chilliwack Corn Maze
Tuesday, September 6th – Monday, October 31st, Thursday & Friday, 6 pm – 9 pm; Saturdays, 1 pm – 9 pm; Sundays and holidays, 1 pm – 6 pm, 41905 Yale Road West, Chilliwack
In addition to the 14-acre maze, they also have a pumpkin patch with over 10 varieties of pumpkins and gourds, an indoor hay bale maze, corn train rides (weather permitting), and a giant jumping pillow and spider web. They’ll be open for the Pro D day on October 21st from 1 pm – 6 pm, and on Halloween night from 1 pm – 7:30 pm. Admission – Children 2 and under are free, children 3 – 12, and adults, pay $8: www.chilliwackcornmaze.com

Richmond Country Farms
Saturday, October 8th – Monday, October 31st, Weekdays 9 am – 1:30 pm, Weekends 10 am – 4:30 pm, 12900 Steveston Highway, Richmond
Despite their amazingly irritating website, this is a popular pumpkin patch that also features a corn maze, sing-along hay rides, and entertainers like Polly Pumpkin and Korny Corn. Weekday admission is $7, and weekend admission is $11. Admission includes one kid-sized pumpkin. Kids under 2 are free: www.countrypumpkinpatch.ca

Rondriso Farms
Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st, Hay wagon rides: 10 am – 6 pm on weekends, holidays and professional day, and 3 pm – 6 pm on weekdays, 8390 172nd Street, Surrey
Take a hay wagon ride through the patch to find the biggest, coolest pumpkin, or choose already picked pumpkins, mini pumpkins, gourds, winter veggies and more from their new general store. You can also visit the cows and calves in the barn, or book them for a fall BBQ or birthday soirée. It appears admission is free: www.rondriso.com

Westham Island Herb Farm Pumpkin Patch
Saturday, October 1st – Monday, October 31st, 9 am – 5 pm, Westham Island Herb Farm, 4690 Kirkland Road, Delta
This year’s theme at Westham Island is the Weird and Wacky World of Westham. With a haunted house geared to little ones, pre-picked or pick your own pumpkins, a general store stocked with their own produce as well as ornamental gourds, corn stalks, hay bales and the like, and the Reifel Island Bird Sanctuary and Westham Island Winery just minutes away, a trip to the island is a perfect weekend afternoon excursion. Willow View Farms Pumpkin Patch
Every weekend in October, Saturdays, 9 am – 5:30 pm & Sundays, 11 am – 5:30 pm, 288 McCallum Road, Abbotsford
Not only can you U Pick pumpkins and apples, but on weekends there are hayrides through the orchard, a petting barn, a concession, a playground, and a country store. Plus, in October the hay rides will stop at the pumpkin patch.  During the week you can drop by and walk out to the pumpkin patch, and they’ll be open on the October 21st Pro D day as well. Hay rides cost $2, and admission is free: www.willowviewfarms.com
