trick or teeth

Knowing our kids will come home tonight clutching big sacks of sugar started us thinking about the wisdom of our current rule of “X number of pieces of Halloween candy a day for as long as it lasts”. So we talked to Dr. Robin Mak of Kits Family Dental for her take on Halloween treats, and a pile more toothsome truths.
vancouver: what to do, what to do?

The days have been so gorgeous in the lower mainland (but definitely colder, have you gotten out your mittens yet?) and it’s lovely to get outside and enjoy the weather. You can go on a nature walk, learn all about mushrooms, or stomp some grapes at a winery. If you want to stay warm inside, check out the library’s book sale or the wedding swap. With less than a week until Halloween, it’s a great time to check out a pumpkin patch, or drop in on some crafts, pumpkin carving, skates, or other Halloween activities.

fall into style
Fall has arrived, with its rust coloured leaves and pumpkin goodness. We have finally packed away all the shorts, sunhats and sundresses, and have brought out the sweaters, toques and tights. But just because we’ve bundled up our tots, doesn’t mean they have to stop looking fabulous. Here’s our head to toe list of a few of our favourite Canadian fall finds for the toddler set.
daytripping: port moody
Even though the summer sun has left and sweater season is upon us, we can still pack up our car and enjoy a cool weather road trip. And feeling the need for a bit more culture in our lives, we headed out to breathtaking Port Moody, the City of the Arts.

if the shoe fits
While we can always roll up our kids’ sleeves and pant legs if we buy too big, shoes are more problematic (our kid has literally run right out of a too-big pair of shoes). So when we heard OLLY shoes has an easy, reliable, and accurate solution to sizing up our little one’s feet, and three GTA locations, we ran right over.

spooktacularly safe

It chills us to the bone knowing that every year hospitals, medical clinics, and the ambulance service end up treating many preventable Halloween injuries, like burns, cuts, choking, and car accidents. The key word? Preventable. We’re writing about Halloween safety a week early this year because prevention is all about planning, and for that Mama, we know you need a little time.

As always, the weekend is abundant with things to do for families in the lower mainland. You can enjoy some tasty food at Savour or at the Oktoberfest luncheon; pick up some fantastic bargains at the library book sale, baby sample sale, or kids swap meets; or explore the outdoors at Lynn Canyon, or the Richmond Nature House. Diwali celebrations are wrapping up with a bang this weekend, the salmon are swimming past Stanley Park, and Richmond is celebrating Science week. If you want to get into the Halloween spirit, there are lots of new events on our Halloween HQ page.

It’s getting chilly, but the fall colours are beautiful and the city is still bustling. So gather the family, bundle up, and take in some Toronto fun this weekend! Barney, our fave purple dinosaur, is in town; kids can learn to be a Pirate at T.O.’s castle, Casa Loma; the Riverside neighbourhood at Queen and Broadview is hosting a Fall riverside walk; and the family dogs can even get in on the fun with a couple of Halloween pet parties happening for charity.
