Chez nous, lip balm is akin to candy… our kiddo can’t keep away from the stuff. While we can’t ban lip balm from our house (it’s on our ‘take to a desert island’ list), we can try to keep it as natural as possible. Which is why we love Kiss Naturals DIY Lip Balm Making Kit. Not only can we pronounce each ingredient that goes into it, but we get to put them there ourselves.

The time is almost here…in less than a month little ones go back to (pre)school! And as much as you’ve loved spending your summer days playing with your kiddos, there is that little feeling of joy at the thought of being able to get some adult time. You’ll also feel joyful if you wi this back to school themed contest as Active Baby is giving away a Govinci Backpack or a Goodbyn Lunch Kit.

No matter how hard we try to keep calm and carry on, life with wee ones is often hectic and fraught with chaos. As we’ve mentioned a few times, one of our favourite ways to escape is to jump in our car to get away from it all by playing tourist in our own region, and the summer is perfect for these explorations. Recently, we hopped onto the Trans Canada and wheeled our way to Abbotsford to visit Clayburn Village.

super markets

Ah, summer. The time of year when biting into a fresh peach or slicing juicy field tomatoes makes us grateful for homegrown fruit and produce. In the GTA we’re lucky to have an abundance of Farmers’ Markets, which are typically open until October and offer fresh and tasty treats grown nearby. Visiting a market is a great way to spend a few hours with the kiddos, and there’s nothing like knowing the food on your plate was grown locally, sustainably, and recently! Here’s a list of local Farmers’ Markets – just don’t forget the reusable bags:

‘save my spot’ and other extracurricular stresses

Scheduling your child’s extracurricular activities is, even at the best of times, a bit like navigating a land mine. If you do too little the guilt sets in that they’re being ‘left behind’; if you do too much you start to worry about how your hyper-parenting might create frenetic, anxious children. Add in the stresses of wait lists, save my spots, and the pressures of September – with everyone getting used to a new school year – and you have high meltdown potential.

This weekend is filled with trains, trucks and blueberries…so really, something for everyone. From the Thomas Show and Shine to a Fire Truck Open House to the yummy Cloverdale Blueberry Festival, there is no end to the fun in our fair cities. And if trucks, trains and berries don’t float your boat, the always popular Harmony Arts Festival and Celebration of Light certainly will. Summer fun abounds!

There’s plenty of tasty treats and fun to be had in the City this weekend! Tempt your taste buds with Greek delights at Taste Of The Danforth, enjoy fresh corn on the cob at St. Lawrence Market’s Corn Roast, or partake in the good kind of jerk at Jerkfest. Or head to Pawsway to learn all about that puppy your kids keep bugging you for, visit the Black-Footed ferrets at the Zoo, or join the family storytelling workshop at Black Creek Pioneer Village. One month left before school starts, so get out there and have fun!

baby biking bonanza

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | August 3, 2011

In yesterday’s Vancouver editorial, we talked bikes for big(ger) kids. Today, we’re thinking small. Unlike when we were wee, kids these days start earlier and earlier with pre-bikes of all shapes and sizes and learn their love of ‘wheeling’ at their parents side with bike seats.

Unlike many of the intrepid commuters we see every day, bike riding went the way of the dodo in our life long before we had kids. We just didn’t have space to store bike trailers and traffic made us nervous, so, sadly, our wheels went from two to four. But then our kids become super cyclists and we wanted to join them…not only to keep an eye on what they were up to on the road, but they’d reminded us just how fun riding a bike can be. Since our whole family was in need of some new wheels, we checked out bikes from Canadian company Opus.

down with drama

When it comes to entertainment, it can sometimes be a challenge to find something kid-friendly that doesn’t involve screen time. And if you’re anything like us, you love live theatre and want to share that love with your kids. So with that in mind, we headed on out to Solar Stage Children’s Theatre where drama abounds, and everyone is happy about it.
