pucker up

Chez nous, lip balm is akin to candy… our kiddo can’t keep away from the stuff. While we can’t ban lip balm from our house (it’s on our ‘take to a desert island’ list), we can try to keep it as natural as possible. Which is why we love Kiss Naturals DIY Lip Balm Making Kit. Not only can we pronounce each ingredient that goes into it, but we get to put them there ourselves.

Montreal-based Kiss Naturals was started by Marie Pallet and Mike Wiesel, whose products represent their belief that “… Nature got it right the first time.” The company makes do-it-yourself beauty product kits that are free of fillers, additives, dyes or synthetics. Kiss Natural products are made in Canada and are safe for even the littlest gaffers.

We tested the lip balm kit, which comes in a clear zippered pouch and has ten pots for the finished balm, two bottles of essential oils (pink grapefruit and orange), Shea butter, Safflower Oil, and beeswax – all in pre-measured containers. You melt the Shea butter, oil, and beeswax on the stove or in the microwave, add your essential oils, pour it in the pots, and voila – homemade lip balm.

We chose the stove-melting method, and our little tester stood nearby while we heated the ingredients. (Note: kids should always be supervised when making the lip balm, as the oil mixture did get very hot.) We added the recommended 15 drops of each essential oil (both smelled great) but the finished product was only mildly scented, so next time we’d add more. We also added some red food dye, à la their suggestion, hoping to create a light shade of pink. But no matter what we did it wouldn’t blend and we ended up with pale yellow lip balm, with tiny balls of red at the bottom. Not exactly what we’d envisioned.

The fun project took half an hour and was perfect for our preschooler’s attention span. We think these kits would make a great birthday gift and would be a fabulous activity for a kid’s party.

Now if only Kiss Naturals had a DIY anti-aging skin cream kit for us tired mamas…
