If you’re anything like us, you love finding just the “right” gift for the little ones in your life. And while the big box stores can offer deep discounts and impressive inventory, the shopping experience usually leaves something to be desired. Which is why we’ll find any excuse for a shopping excursion to Kol Kid – Queen West’s very cool kid gift, gear, and garb shop.
Tucked in amongst other hip stores that line the trendy Queen West, you could miss Kol Kid if your eyes are on the lookout for a coveted parking spot. The storefront, like most neighbouring shops, is understated with simple signage. The store itself is narrow yet surprisingly deep, which makes browsing easy … as long as you don’t bring a stroller. On that note, we’d recommend finding some kid-free time to visit Kol Kid. You’ll enjoy perusing and shopping much more if you can do so with only a latte in hand.
Kol Kid is a store focused more on want than need. They have an impressive assortment of gifts for any kid, from infant to school-aged: books, soft muslin swaddle blankets, sterling silver rattles, delicate paper mobiles, games (most non-battery), clothing, shoes, gear like backpacks and lunchboxes, and a great collection of art to adorn little people’s walls, that will also appeal to parents who loathe butterfly decals or teddy bear picnic canvases.
On our last visit we were smitten with this ethereal Dagmar Daley-Jubilee dress, which we tried to justify buying for our birthday girl, even if her party was at Springridge Farm. While she would have looked stunning for her pony rides and hay bale jumping, we were smart enough to realize it wasn’t the right occasion for such a pretty dress. We also kept coming back to these adorable owl book ends, and think they may be the perfect back to school gift to hold a kiddo’s growing book collection.
Kol Kid’s cool vibe and unique goods make it worth the visit, and we’re sure you won’t leave without at least one treasure. So bring your wallet and be prepared to use it: Kol Kid has really great stuff, and none would be classified as “inexpensive.” Regardless, we think we need to go back for the bookends…and maybe the dress for the next birthday. Mamas need to plan ahead, right?
