sun in

Filed Under Going Green, Tips & Tricks | June 8, 2011

Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes their guide to sunscreen, reviewing the best sunscreens (those that provide the most protection via the least hazardous chemicals), the latest research, ingredients to avoid, sun safety tips, and more. And every year we track down their most highly rated kids’ sunscreens and put them to the test. This year we’ve got two for the babes, and one for you, because experience has proven that we’re really good at making sure our kids are covered, but sometimes we forgot about our own skin…

Green Beaver Certified Organic SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen
Canada’s own Green Beaver has created the first organic and non-chemical sunscreen to be approved by Health Canada. It’s waterproof, non-nano (here’s why that’s important), non-silicone coated, and it’s non-whitening despite being zinc-based. It goes on easily with no hint of a ghosting effect, and it passed the pool test, protecting fragile preschooler skin that hadn’t seen the sun all winter for over an hour in an outdoor pool: www.raspberrykids.com

Badger SPF 30 Natural Zinc Oxide Baby Sunscreen

Last year Badger’s Sunscreen Face Stick made our list, and this year they’ve introduced a baby sunscreen for babes 6 months+. Also zinc-based, water-resistant, comes in BPA and Phthalate-free packaging, and it doesn’t contain nanoparticles. We love the soothing calendula and chamomile scent, and it’s truly moisturizing, which is good for our grown-up skin as well as that of our tots, but it does need a lot of rubbing in to avoid the zinc whitening effect:

Pure+Simple All Natural SPF 30
Toronto-based Pure+Simple’s mineral sunscreens for the face haven’t been rated by the EWG, but they do contain the sort of sun-fighting ingredients that the EWG approves of. With different formulations for different skin types, from Anti-Aging to Oily/Impure, they’re Zinc and Titanium Dioxide-based with no nano particles (are you sensing a theme here?) Designed to be used alone or over your daily moisturizer, you have to apply these quickly to avoid whitening, but we love protecting our face as part of our morning routine: www.pureandsimple.ca

While we find zinc-based kids’ sunscreens a bit sticky, which can be a hazard at places like, say, the beach, we do like that they’re effective as soon as they’re put on. Because getting our kids organized to head out and putting on sunscreen 20 minutes before we leave the house can be a little tricky to organize…
