It’s OWL Magazine’s 35th birthday this month, and we’d like to take a moment to recognize their contribution to parents … and kids too, of course! Now this isn’t the first time we’re chatting about our love for OWL, and we’re pretty sure it won’t be the last. Crammed full of facts, puzzles, crafts, stories and experiments, with the added bonus of arriving in the mail, kids have been looking forward to OWL arriving each month since, well since we were kids. And what makes the kids happy, makes us happy.

But what is OWL’s most important contribution? OWL answers questions; baffling, crazy questions about space, nature, technology, and the human body.  The type of questions that are both cause for celebration (what wonderful, inquisitive kids we have!) and frustration (I have no idea, I can’t answer that, I’m trying to cook dinner).  OWL gets more than 15,000 letters from kids each year, and many of those wacky questions end up in the magazine or its sister publications, Chickadee and Chirp.

And now, in celebration of their 35 years, they’ve reissued “You Asked?” Over 300 Great Questions and Astounding Answers.  It’s essential summer reading for kids prone to such questions as, “Do blind people dream?”, “Why do pennies stink after you hold them?”, “Why are there still footprints on the moon?”, and, “Why can’t fish close their eyes?”, plus so many more. The Max Finder Mystery Series is also a favourite, they’re all about keeping your eyes peeled for clues and being aware of the world around you. And younger readers will also enjoy another OWL Kids publication, Why? The best ever question and answer book about nature, science and the world around you.

So when your kids are getting a little owly this summer (sorry, couldn’t resist!) give them some answers they can really sink their teeth into.
