Now that the snow’s long gone and the temps are heading into shorts and t-shirts weather, the kids will be itching to spend as much time as possible outside. But while there’s great fun to be had in the great outdoors, it’s important to remember the old adage of “safety first.” So in honour of Safe Kids Week this week here are a few tips to help keep the kids safe and healthy this summer season:

Here comes the sun – There’s nothing better than playing outside on a hot, sunny day. So make sure your kiddo’s skin is well covered, with a kid-friendly sunscreen and protective clothing (don’t forget a hat that covers little ears). Also, kids play hard, so they need plenty of hydration to ensure they don’t get overheated or develop heat stroke. Reusable water bottles like these are perfect for sunny day play!

Water play – We know you’ve heard it before, but never (ever) leave kids unattended around water. Children (those age 5 and under are particularly at risk) can drown in as little as one inch of water, and it only takes a quick, back-turned moment. Pools should be properly fenced, adults or babysitters should be CPR certified, and kids should use lifejackets or appropriate floatation gear when around the water.

Time to eat – Nothing shouts summer like firing up the BBQ. But remember some foods, like hotdogs (always cut them lengthwise), are serious choking hazards for the kid crowd. Also, watch food like raw veggies, such as carrots, and grapes, which can easily get stuck in little throats. And be sure to keep cold food cold, and hot food hot – anything in between is a risk for food poisoning, which can ruin a beautiful summer day like nothing else.

Fun on wheels – Maybe this is the summer your kiddo learns to ride her bike. Or finally gets that coveted scooter for a quicker ride to the park. Either way, insist on a helmet – and a proper fitting one at that. To make donning a helmet more fun, let your child pick out his own helmet design, or a cool cover (we love these ones).  Also, teach the rules of road safety before leaving the driveway, and while it may seem obvious, stick to the sidewalk.

Playground play – Summer is fun. And things like playgrounds and outdoor trampolines can provide great exercise, and a way to burn off some of that endless energy. To keep your kids safe during playground play, always supervise – especially if they’re on a new play structure that isn’t familiar to them. Or better yet, suss out an age-appropriate playground. And when it comes to trampoline time, make sure it has a safety net and encourage the “one at a time” rule.
