bumps, bites and burns

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | June 29, 2011

Enjoying all the fun summer brings does have a downside, namely a proliferation of pint-sized bumps, bites, and burns. So we’ve gathered an eco-friendly arsenal for your first aid kit to combat summer “owies”, because being prepared means you’ll also enjoy your summer more. Plus, all these multi-tasking products are safe for use on adults and kids, and fit easily into a diaper or beach bag:

Combat-Ready Balm
This cream from Skincando is packed with powerful non-toxic ingredients such as apricot kernel oil, black tea, and grapefruit seed extract, and soothes everything from diaper rash, to scratches, to sunburn (because sometimes even our best efforts at sun protection don’t succeed). We’ve tested this lightly scented, supremely moisturizing cream on minor ouchies from skinned knees to mild sunburn, and it has an immediate calming effect without any stinging. In a pinch, you could use it as a moisturizer, and it works as an aftershave for dads: www.innocentearth.ca

Natural Headache Relief Roll-On
Not only can use this when your little ones’ summer exuberance (and yelling) goes to your head, but it has three other great summer uses as well: it relieves itchiness from rashes and insect bites; you can roll it on your temples and wrists to combat road trip queasiness; and you can use it on the soles of your feet to cool them down. Essential oils of peppermint and lavender are what give this roll-on its punch, and while we haven’t yet tested it on bug bites, it was definitely effective against nausea and headaches: www.escentsaromatherapy.com

Lavender Spray Mist
We keep this spray in our fridge for when our overheated tots need a little cooling off, or for when they (or us) come home with a mild sunburn (hey, we’re not perfect!). It easily spritzes on to help soothe skin and beat the heat, and it multi-tasks as a room or linen spray, so if your summer travels take you to a musty cabin this is great for freshening things up. It does contain a small amount of parabens to inhibit bacteria growth, so if you’d rather a paraben-free formulation there’s a great recipe for a make-your-own After Sun Spray on the Escents site: www.escentsaromatherapy.com
