With spring finally here, and summer not far off, it’s time to shake off the winter chill and head outdoors for some family fun. And what better way to get outside than to have a family picnic? The GTA has some amazing parks, primed for picnicking, so here’s out roundup of the best places to lay down that blanket and enjoy some food, play, and sun with the family.
Sunnyside Park: This waterfront park has all the elements for a perfect picnic day: a beach, swimming, a long boardwalk, a recreation trail for cycling and rollerblading, a kid’s playground, picnic tables, and lots of shaded grassy areas. And in case you’d rather buy your picnic lunch, pizza, drinks, and hot dogs and hamburgers are easy to come by.
Etienne Brule Park: Conveniently located right next to the Old Mill Subway Station, this park features a historic bridge, a valley picnic park, playground facilities that will keep the kids busy, and great walking trails to burn off some of the after-lunch energy. So pack a picnic and spend the day!
The Toronto Islands: Many people take the ferry over to the Islands to visit Centreville Amusement Park, which is a great way to spend a day. But there are also plenty of awesome picnic spots, some with fire pits, and a Franklin-themed children’s garden to explore after a yummy lunch. Note: If you’re planning a picnic for more than 25 people, you will need a permit.
High Park: High Park is vast, but it can get pretty busy on a beautiful, sunny weekend. Luckily, you can pre-book one of 18 designated picnic areas (permits required for 25 or more people). And after the picnic, the fun can keep going – the kids will love the zoo, the playgrounds, the trackless train, gardens, and the walking trails.
