In today’s technological world, it can be tough to get kids to break away from their gadgets and engage in some old-fashioned playtime. So how about a family trip back in time, before TV and Nintendo, with a visit to Black Creek Pioneer Village?
Toronto’s Black Creek Pioneer Village is a recreated 19th-century pioneer community, and a hands-on experience of what “city” life was like in the 1800s. For most kids a world without cars, computers, or electricity may be hard to imagine – which is what makes the Village such a fun and different day trip. Kids will have a chance to see what life was like during those times, when people relied on the land where they lived for food, shelter, work, and play. With over 35 restored heritage buildings, like a smoke house and school house, and historic interpreters dressed in period costume, kids get a first hand experience of pioneer life; including the games kids played, and how food was stored and prepared. Kids can also watch traditional trades people at work, like a blacksmith and tinsmith, and see just how much work was involved to create many of the items we take for granted today.
At the History Centre for Kids, the little ones can test their hands at pioneer survival skills and trades, like building a log cabin and weaving cloth. The Village is set on about 30 acres (plenty of space to roam and play) so make sure you have a good chunk of time – at least three hours – to enjoy all the demonstrations, activities, and authentic experiences. Black Creek Pioneer Village also offers camp programs throughout the summer (ages 8-14), and educational programs for all ages (including preschool programs).
And after a fun-filled and educational day in the Village, we’re sure the kids will be tuckered out and have a much greater appreciation for the conveniences of modern life. Maybe they’ll even be inspired to put away the video games and spend more time adventuring like the pioneer kids. Which means you could enjoy a quiet cup of tea, for a change.
