Chocolate rocks. Scrumptious, melt-y chocolate. And we love helping the Easter Bunny hide chocolaty treats for our wee ones to find. But our challenge is locating ‘green’ chocolate — local, fair trade, and organic — that’s still yummy. So imagine our excitement when we discovered Organic Fair from Cobble Hill, BC (which also happens to be yoyomama Erin’s hometown!)
Organic Fair has been around since the 1990s and they’re all about sustainability. Every product they make, from coffee, to spices, to chocolate (oh, the chocolate) is organic, fair trade, and environmentally responsible. They also believe food that is good for you (and the planet) also needs to taste good, which is all the better for us.
So in the name or research, we delved into an assortment of brightly wrapped dark chocolates (we love our job). Each flavour combo is unique to Organic Fair and we were wary of some at first, like the fig, rooibos, and clementine in the cape town bar. But the 70% dark chocolate was smooth and delectable, and the little bits of fruit, nut, and spice really brought out the flavour of the cocoa. Every bar we tasted (and we tried them all) managed to make absolute flavour sense.
Some of the flavours may be challenging for petite palates, but we found a few sure to tickle wee taste buds. The little monkey, with cinnamon, raisins, and bananas; the corazon, with vanilla bean, cocoa nibs, honey and rose flavours; and the canadiana, with maple syrup, sundried apples, and alder smoked salt, will delight any kid — or kid at heart.
Organic Fair sources their products as locally as possible (heck, they even grow some of them) and they’ll ship anywhere. You can also find their products at retail locations across Canada. We think a tasty Organic Fair chocolate bar (or two) would make a perfect Easter treat. As long as the Easter Bunny can hide them before we get our hands on them….
