Stainless-Steel

You love your stainless steel containers for snacks and lunches, but when it comes to storing leftovers they’re not quite so handy (they look good, but what’s inside?) You love your glass Pyrex (great visibility), but you’re not so keen on the plastic lids. So what’s a leftover storing mama to do? Well, you could invest in Onyx’s new Glass and Stainless Steel Airtight Containers?

We’re already fans of the Canadian company, Onyx, which also produces stainless steel popsicle molds and ice cube trays, among other handy stainless steel things. But we don’t jest when we say invest – these containers start at $23. So we did a cost per use comparison, and when you consider that you’ll have them forever … well we don’t know quite what that equals out to, but it ends up being pretty reasonable.

This series of square-, round-, and rectangular-shaped airtight containers vary in capacity from 400 ml to almost 2 liters. They’re made from stainless steel, FDA approved silicone, and borosilicate glass, which withstands changes in temperatures better than typical glass. Plus, no plastic, and only the smallest bit of silicone, touches your food.  And they’re dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe (stainless steel lids excepted when it comes to the microwave, of course), which always makes us happy.

We love the airtight lids, and while we don’t find these particularly portable in terms of lunches on the go (they’re heavy, and we’re not keen on glass in our kiddos’ lunch bags), they are perfect for leftovers or pre-made frozen meals. However, we would not suggest using them when you drop off food for friends, as we suspect you’d never get your container back. Although filled with a meal, they’d make a great new mum gift…
