We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. There are times when we long for the carefree days of our youth when toys were kid powered and batteries and plugs were rarely required, times when wooden toys were the norm and handcrafted was heaven. So when we walked into Chirps Children’s Store, we were as giddy as a schoolgirl.
Chirps Children’s Store is the brainchild of Patrick and Leigh Ireland, co-Presidents and parents of the back-to-the-basics with modern sensibilities store. Every nook and cranny of this Richmond based business is filled with natural spa products, eco-friendly food safe containers, a wonderful collection of books, crafting kits, wooden toys, family games and clothes by local designers including Peekaboo Beans, Popo’s Ponchos, Parade and Redfish Kids. Items are Canadian and mom and dad-preneur made wherever possible. This ‘ain’t your run of the mill big box store folks.
We loved that we could find much loved brands like Plan, Hape and Lego, and were tickled to discover soon to be new beloveds like Nova Scotia based Toymaker of Lunenburg. With the store separated into inspiring zones of play such as kitchen, bath, board games, arts and crafts and clothing, and with toys easily accessible to tiny browsers wanting to explore, your little one will be easily distracted while you harken back to your own days of play.
We were sad to discover that Chirps is planning a move to the Okanagan in the summer, but they will be around until the end of May offering great deals on their amazing stock. Maybe this move will inspire them to build a website so that their new favourite customers from the Lower Mainland can continue to be favourite customers in their new home. We’re looking forward to hearing about where they land so we can check them out as we toodle around wine country (ha ha).
With something for almost every tot on your list, and at almost every price point imaginable, Chirps will definitely make you feel like a kid again. Now, if only they could make us look like a kid again…that would be magic.
