Remember the childhood joy and sweet anticipation of freshly baked cookies straight from the oven? Now with your own little cookie monsters underfoot, we understand that baking is probably more about mess control than anything else. But a trip to Sweet Flour Bake Shop will bring that childhood cookie joy back and keep your kitchen spotless.
Sweet Flour, located in T.O.’s Bloor West Village, is the first bakeshop in the city to do a custom cookie in two minutes flat. Owner, and new mum, Kim Gans combined her business and food branding background with her entrepreneurial spirit – and of course, a passion for cookies – to create a unique experience. Sweet Flour has a significant mum and kid clientele, so features like stroller space, highchairs, and cushy leather chairs are noteworthy. Plus, the menu goes beyond sweet treats, with homemade granola, yogurt, muffin tops and a multitude of organic and local beverages, like Hewitt milk in glass bottles.
Kim gave us a custom cookie lesson on our recent visit, and here’s how it works: You pick your dough (choice of original, oatmeal, or peanut butter), plus two toppings (such as dark chocolate chunks, Macadamia nuts or dried cherries), and your custom designed cookie is mixed and baked while you wait. Two minutes later, you have a piping hot and delicious cookie to share, or better yet, to enjoy all to yourself. Sweet Flour also has cookie sandwiches, which consist of two crispy cookies (either shortbread, chocolate, or peanut butter), with spreads like maple, vanilla crème, or salted caramel layered between them. We created an original dough cookie, with semi-sweet chocolate chunks, and ruffle-style potato chips (delicious – really), and an oatmeal version, complete with Snickers, M&Ms, and topped with the maple spread. Your cookie wish is their command!
Kim told us 99% of their ingredients are made in-house and all natural, with nothing you wouldn’t find in your own kitchen. They also support local community, using coffee from a Kensington Market roaster to create one of the best lattes we’ve had in the city. Kim spent a year perfecting Sweet Flour’s recipes with culinary experts, and they continue to come up with new combinations and ideas. And in case you’re wondering, there are literally 15,000 different cookie combinations you could create at Sweet Flour.
