When you’re looking for toys for a wee babe who tends to chew and gum everything, you’re as interested in safety as you are developmental appropriateness. When everything they pick up or find on the floor ends up in their mouth, you shudder and put it down to the peck of dirt you know they’ll ingest in their lifetime, but at least you can maintain a modicum of control and pick toys for them  that don’t contain BPA, phthalates, PVC or lead.

Toys from Dandelion fit the bill for both you and your babe – they’re safe(er) and fun. We recently had a tiny tester put their natural teethers and organic dolls to the gummy test and they passed with flying, if slightly damp, colours.

For some reason plastic teething keys appeal to every child but you don’t really want them chewing on regular plastic. Which is why this set made from cornstarch bioplastic that’s BPA, PVC and phthalate-free is such a good find. Our tester has pimped out her ride with these and the attaching links to keep them from dragging on the ground.  Just a note however, the corn plastic doesn’t hold up well to washing in super hot water, so best to hand wash these and not leave them to soak for too long.

As for their organic cotton dolls, they do contain just a titch of non-organic polyester to keep their shape, but other than that they’re stuffed with corn fibre which holds up to washing better than cotton filling and they owe their colour to low-impact dyes. The fact they’re washable is key. Who among us hasn’t had to discard a dirty stuffie or doll that no amount of spot cleaning could fix? Or that didn’t survive a round with the washing machine? Which, when your little takes to them as firmly as our tester did, can be disastrous.

There really wasn’t anything not to like about Dandelion’s toys. They’re well-priced, eco-friendly and developmentally appropriate. Bring on the gumming, sucking, licking, kissing, throwing out of stroller, dragging across the floor, chewing and teething. Okay, maybe not the teething…
