February’s installment of yoyo radio is all about love. We asked children’s musician Marnie Grey, whose latest album Super Kids hit the shelves just in time for Valentine’s Day, to share some of the songs she loves.
And a little heads up if you’re looking to add a new album to your musical oeuvre: Super Kids is eminently danceable, with easy-to-catch-onto lyrics your kids will be chanting in no time. And we love the Music with Marnie band, their music is spectacular! So without further ado here is music Marine loves, and just like her album they span many different musical styles:
Light in You ~ Great Lake Swimmers
About three years ago I was listening to CBC Radio, and this fabulous Canadian Band, was playing live in the studio. I was running late to meet a friend for coffee, but had to sit in my car and hear the end of this song, it was just too good! As soon as I finished coffee with my friend, I ran to Red Cat Records and purchased the CD
Bob Marley ~ Is this Love
This song is at the top of my list as one of my favourite Bob Marley Tunes. I love how he so joyfully sings about the simplicity of life and love.
Xavier Rudd ~ Better People
This Australian musician, who has recorded a lot of albums in Canada, never stops amazing me with his heartfelt music and socially conscious vibe. Many of his songs, like this one, give a great message about the environment and the world around us.
Music with Marnie ~ Goin’ Green
Speaking of the environment, this parent friendly ‘rock tune’ is from our newest album Super Kids, and teaches the importance of the three R’s.
Radiohead ~ Green Plastic Trees
My love for Radiohead came years ago, when my friend, a very talented musician introduced me to them. Tom Yorkes vocals make me melt, as do my friends. Alas, my friend never became a famous musician like Tom Yorke, but he did go off to save the planet and become a Dr. of Toxicology.
The Beatles ~ I will
There are so many fabulous Beatles songs that are adult and child friendly. Such as Raffi’s version of the yellow submarine. One of my favourite picks is ‘I will’. It means a lot to me as it was the third song my husband and I danced to on our wedding day.
Vampire Weekend ~ A Punk
I just love these guys! They’re lively and fun and remind me of a bunch of college boys who love playing music together.
Black Eyed Peas ~ I Got a Feeling
Remember when they did the flash mob on Oprah? That was so awesome! Their music is fun and lively and great for the whole family to boogie to!
Harry Belafonte ~ Banana Boat Song
This was a traditional Jamaican Folk Song that was made popular by ‘The King of Calypso’ Harry Belafonte in 1957, and it’s still holding strong years later. When I asked one of my characters, Mumbu the Monkey what song he liked best, he chose this, and thinks kids would love it too! There’s a great video of Harry singing this song on the Muppets.
Extreme ~ More than Words
Takes me back to 1992 when almost every guy who played guitar, was trying to learn this tune, including my husband. This was the first song he ever played for me on the guitar. With it being the month of love, I thought it’d be fun to end off with a sappy one hit wonder.
Just a reminder, you don’t need to join or subscribe to blip.fm to hear our playlists, all you have to do is tune in!
