Some people who talk about “creating” at this time of year are focusing on higher level thinking about crafting the year ahead, but in our case about we’re usually madly thinking of ways to keep our kids busy. What with the weather generally not being in our favour and a hint of cabin fever in the air, we’re always on the hunt for inspiration. So when Create, Update, Remake: DIY Projects for You, Your Family and Your Home from the editors of Canadian Living came across our desk we immediately opened it to the Kids section and dove in.

Now that the holiday madness,with its visits from relatives, school concerts and rabid consumerism, is behind us (has left us behind,) we are again looking for ways to keep our kids busy despite the inclement weather. And playdates are always good, ideally in places with lots of toys and activities for little ones and ready access to coffee and goodies for us – places like Kinder Café in Coquitlam.

Hearing safety has come up on yoyomama.ca in the past, but in the wake of holidays when many little ones may have gotten some version of an iPod, or they’re using your new iPhone or iPad –and you’d rather not hear them playing Angry Birds – we thought it timely to remind you that it’s important to avoid ear bud type headphones and use headsets instead. And a timely reminder wouldn’t be complete without a timely solution, like MyPhones.

One way to get the year off to a great start is keeping everyone in your family healthy, which can be hard at this time of year. So we wanted to remind you about the power of the simple art of hand washing. And also remind you that anti-bacterial products appear to do more harm than good as they can lead to bacterial resistance, decreasing the effectiveness of antibiotics and contain triclosan, a hormone disruptor. Luckily we’ve found a great liquid hand soap that’s not just not antibacterial but also organic, Dr. Bronner’s Organic Hand Wash.
