Hearing safety has come up on yoyomama.ca in the past, but in the wake of holidays when many little ones may have gotten some version of an iPod, or they’re using your new iPhone or iPad –and you’d rather not hear them playing Angry Birds – we thought it timely to remind you that it’s important to avoid ear bud type headphones and use headsets instead. And a timely reminder wouldn’t be complete without a timely solution, like MyPhones.

Designed for kids from three to 12, MyPhones are stylin’ with mix and match earcaps so your little one can personalize them or they can design their own earcaps and customize the carrying case. They also give great sound, but the reason they’re really a great solution is they have a built-in, ungettaroundable sound-control circuit that caps peak volume at 85 decibels, the maximum level recommended by many auditory health organizations. Oh and the earpads are washable too, which is handy as we feel anything used by kids should be easy to clean.

We tested them ourselves and found the sound crisp and clear and no matter how hard we tried we couldn’t get the volume up past a certain level. In fact we wouldn’t mind if they capped the sound at an even lower decibel rate, as the highest rate was more than high enough for our ears or those of our little rock stars, but none-the-less we still appreciate that our kids can’t overdose on volume no matter how hard they try.

Admittedly we actually discovered Griffin Technology, the company behind MyPhones, because we were intrigued by the Woogie, which allows your little ones to play with your phone or PDA while keeping it protected. Alas, Woogie’s aren’t available in Canada (yet) but we’ll be the first to try one out when they make it to our shores.

‘Till then at least you know your kids will hear no evil, or at least what they hear won’t do evil to their ears.
