appliance envy

There are times when we fantasize about the good old days.  We remember the smells of freshly baked bread, scratch made soups and slow cooked stews from our youth.  And we have every intention of making those things and more for our little ones each and every meal.  We just don’t always have the time.

Which is why we were excited to try out the Thermomix.

The Thermomix is a European multi-purpose food appliance that is a clever blend of modern technology and old-fashioned sensibilities.  It’s designed to perform a number of functions every cook needs, such as chopping, blending, slow cooking and sautéing, and it does so at an alarming speed and a variety of temperatures.  It also allows you to do things like make your own yogurt and mascarpone, mill your own grains and churn your own butter.

After a few hours of instruction (and yummy Thermomix made food) with Simone, our local Thermomix consultant, we took one home to test drive. We made a to die for risotto in 20 minutes, heavenly mashed potatoes (which were so good we may never eat mashed potatoes again unless they are made in a Thermomix) in 22 minutes, beautiful fruit puree for our fussy toddler in nine minutes and two spectacular sorbets in three minutes.  We also made a few loves of bread, fresh squeezed lemonade and custards that were like silk.  Had we had the machine a bit longer, we probably would have created some from scratch tiramisu (using the aforementioned mascarpone), homemade eggnog, cloud-like meringues and enough soup to fill all the freezers on the block.

Yes…it really is that good.

Of course, magic machines come with a steep price tag…and that price is $1,600. This little dynamo will make it much easier to create a healthy meal for your family and will certainly replace that cupboard full of appliances you already have, but it certainly ‘ain’t cheap.

It doesn’t mean we don’t want one. We just need the perfect excuse, like all our other kitchen appliances mysteriously go on the fritz…
