There isn’t a parent out there who doesn’t know this scenario: you bundle the kid, wrestle them and their marshmallow-sized snowsuit into the stroller, do the hat and mitts check, and head out the door to run an errand. What feels like a second later, you look down and (insert expletive) see only one mitten. Well parents, mimiTENS™, “the mittens that stay on no strings attached” are here to banish your mitten misery!
Owned and operated by Anna-Maria Mountfort, a Toronto-based mom of two, mimiTENS mittens are Canadian-made with eco-friendly materials. What makes these mittens unique is the long cuff that easily stretches up to the elbow, keeping wrists warm and snow-free. mimiTENS are available in two versions, SOFT (a thumbless, bamboo/organic cotton mitten for those 18-months and under) and ALL-WEATHER (water-repellent nylon mitt lined with Thinsulate for kids 18-months to 5 years). Take into consideration the adorable designs, like embroidered owls and boom box options, plus the striped cotton cuffs, and you have mittens every kid will want to wear.
These super-sweet mittens are a great alternative to the tube sock over baby’s hands and arms (we know we’re not alone here!) We found the SOFT mittens warm enough for a stroller ride or short walk outside when temperatures were above face-freezing zone. Anything colder, and little hands had a tough time staying warm.
The thumbed, ALL-WEATHER mittens worked well for some snow play, but extended playtime or wet snow would call for a more waterproof mitten. The cuff (our favourite part) worked like a charm: Our toddler tester was frustrated by her inability to pull the mittens off, but that feature scored big points with us. Now, getting the MimiTENS cuffs over puffy parkas required a little more elbow grease, so we found it easiest to put the mittens on before the coat.
And mimiTENS are all about keeping things warm locally with a portion of sales going to charities such as Sick Kids, Right to Play and the Yonge Street Mission.
