Every Christmas eve my siblings and our families get together at my parents’ home where my mom and dad prepare a hot pot feast. Our hot pot usually consists of cooking a variety of vegetables, meats and seafood in a large “pot” of soup stock in the middle of the table. We cook and eat and cook and eat until we’re completely full, and then we usually open one of our presents.
My Favorite Holiday Tradition is watching the Santa Parade in Steveston on Christmas Eve,then going back home and watching Frosty!!
We’re continuing this tradition with our kids. I love how we all turn into kids when this time of the year rolls around. It the only time I can stand watching cartoons lol
Celebrating the reason for Christmas, and spending time with family.
Christmas has always been about spending time with family and friends. Every Christmas eve, we get dressed in our Christmas best, yummy Christmas treats in tow, and head out into the snowy night towards the home of the hosting Aunt or cousin. My mom has 3 sisters and 4 brothers and most of their children also have children now. Each individual brings a wrapped new or gently used item for a very lively game of “white elephant”. The game brings out much laughter, cheer, and good natured teasing. Our 2.5 year-old will be Santa’s helper this year, delivering each un-opened “white elephant” gift and assisting with the unwrapping.
The holidays are so much fun and we have lot’s of traditions we celebrate! Building a gingerbread house, baking cookies, making salt dough ornaments for gifts, and my daughter also gets a new pair of Xmas jammies every year. This year I’d like to start a tradition of taking a bunch of food and toys to the food bank the week before Christmas. I think it’s so important to teach the act of giving, especially at this time of year.
Our favorite family tradition is spending the holidays with extended family in Winnipeg. The snow and lots of family makes it feel like Christmas.
Christmas jammies for all on Christmas Eve – Loud and proud prints, the louder the better!
We put together gingerbread houses!
We make hundreds of latkes! It takes hours, the entire house smells like oil and I end up covered in oil, but they are delicious to eat.
we eat tortierre on xmas eve.
no one likes it but me but it is a tradition passed down for generations so xmas would not be xmas without it!
It has been so much fun passing on family traditions and starting new traditions with my 3 1/2 year old. My brother and I made an advent calendar when we were kids, and now I use this same calendar with my daughter. It is a felt Christmas tree that you add ornaments to every day. Some of the ornaments were a little tattered, so my daughter and I made some new ones to replace them. I love that I was able to blend something from my past and carry on a tradition with my daughter.
We have enjoyed searching for our perfect Christmas tree with the family, come home, and eat all the goodies by the fire. We make egg nog, chocolates and apple cider and tell Christmas stories. I love this season!!
My favourite part of the holidays is baking! I love pouring through family recipe books and settling on the perfect assortment of holiday cookies for family and friends.
When I was young, my favorite tradition was to go Christmas shopping with my Grandma. She would give me $100 and we would spend the day downtown together shopping for my presents. Usually I would try on clothes at my favorite stores in the morning, then we’d hit White Spot for lunch before returning to the stores to pick up my final selections.
I continued the tradition with my 13 year old God-daughter and am looking forward to doing the same with my own daughter. She is only 2 weeks old though, so it will be a few years before we can get this tradition started again.
Every year we have Xmas eve dinner at my parents’ and Xmas dinner at DH’s mom’s house. Lots of food, family, giggles, and leftovers! This year is our little boo’s second Xmas. Last year we made a personalized Xmas ornament and this year I’ve done the same thing…maybe this will be our new tradition :)
Our new favourite holiday tradition is spending an evening going to the Festival of Lights at our local botanical garden, Van Dusen. Choral music, magical twinkling lights, a quiet walk in the crunching cold(-ish — it is Vancouver). Hot chocolate that burns your tongue. The family together outside in beauty. Almost always a lovely evening.
We’ve had a variety of traditions over the years – my favourites include sleeping over at my parents’ house on Christmas Eve so we’re all together on Christmas morning; my mum’s version of UBC cinnamon buns, hot gooey and sticky for Christmas morning while we open our stockings; and going up to Grouse Mountain to play in the snow with my little girls, preferably on Christmas Eve itself (which is also my birthday).
Christmas is my most favourite time of year for sure! Being a Mom to four young children can be hard finacially at times especially during the holidays but we make it work. I love taking the kids out for a crisp evening walk to look at all the houses that are lit up in the neighbourhood. Also doing the Christmas baking together! This year we are going to add something new! We are going to start making our own tree ornaments! Should be fun! My only wish is that one year I can pay it forward to all the people that have helped out our family during the hard times.
Merry Christmas!!
Baking! Days of making shortbread, gingerbread men and women, Christmas cake, and all matter of goodies. On Christmas morning after stockings and breakfast, we always go for a long family walk; the world always seems especially magical on Christmas day.
Great contest – thanks for the chance to win!
We’re still working on traditions for our two year old. With both Hannukkah and Christmas to celebrate, she’s getting the best of both! Baking, lights, dreidels and latkes!
Simply love taking in all the special kids activities that go on in anticipation of Christmas: Breakfast with Santa, Pictures, Christmas Train, Movies, Baking, and Parties with family and friends.
baking as a family
The entire family of 50+ relatives and friends all get together at my Aunt and Uncle’s place on Christmas Eve, where we stay up until midnight and my big Uncle puts the Santa hat on to hand out the giant pile of gifts under the tree. We all love how he somehow (jokingly) insults each person as they receive their gift… must be a family thing!
oh no! it’s only 11:04 here, in BC! hope my entry makes it in =) thanks!
Pictures with Santa. Poor old santa has to put up with three generations of us cramming into one photo.
