  1. Great prize! My favourite recipe for the holidays is a mini-cheesecake recipe that my family has made for years. I swear it’s the only reason people come to my holiday parties!

  2. What a great compilation of gifts. Fingers crossed. My favourite christmas recipe is rum balls, super easy and no baking required.

    Ingredients
    1 cup icing sugar
    1 cup ground almonds
    3 oz bittersweet chocolate, grated
    1/3 cup dark rum
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/2 cup chocolate sprinkles

    Preparation:
Line trays with waxed paper; set aside.

In large bowl, whisk icing sugar, almonds and bittersweet chocolate. Stir in 1/4 cup of the rum and vanilla until solid moist mass; press together. Chill until firm enough to roll, about 15 minutes.

Roll by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls, moistening and wiping hands with damp cloth as needed. Place on prepared trays.

Pour remaining rum into shallow bowl. Pour chocolate sprinkles into separate shallow bowl. Roll balls in rum then in chocolate, pressing lightly to adhere. Let dry on tray, 1 hour. Refrigerate until firm.

  3. oooh, my lil baby aaron would love all these goodies! :) my holiday recipe that i love making, and it is quickly becoming a tradition, is apple cider. I buy some good quality apple cider, put it on the stove and let it simmer with cloves, cinnamon sticks, maple syrup, and some orange and lemon zest. it envelopes the house with apple christmas smells and it is divine to hold a hot cup in your hands and inhale the heady aroma. mmmmm

  4. Peanut butter marshmallow squares are the best! Melted caramel chips, peanut butter and colored mini marshmallows – can’t go wrong!

  5. Making homeade perogies. My grandma made them, now my Mom does and I want to carry on the tradition for my kids.

  6. My grandfather always made Christmas cake. Not many people like it but my mom and I love it and we now make it for the holidays.

  7. Stonz MITTS?! I love their boots so I’m stoked about these! Ooo and that teething bonbon is MUCH classier to gnaw on than my “socksicles” (frozen baby socks)!

  8. Lemon Squares, have been making them for 20 odd years ..Found them in Canadian Living way back when..Short bread base and a fresh lemen custard like topping…delish

  9. My mom always made nanaimo bars for Christmas. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without them…..but I kind of love the sound peanut marshmallow bars another reader spoke about above. Yumm!

  10. My mom always makes butter tarts, which are a favourite tradition. Now that I have my own children, I may just have to learn!

  11. My favourite super-easy recipe is fudge! It takes hardly any time to make and people LOVE it (they think you slaved over a hot stove for hours)!

    Fudge
Mix 3 cups of chocolate chips with one can of sweetened condensed milk.
Microwave for 2 minutes – no longer.
Add a dash of salt and 1 tsp of Vanilla, stir until good consistency.
Put into a waxed paper lined square pan.
    Refrigerate until set.
I usually remove from fridge and let stand before trying to cut.

  12. I always melt a layer of dark chocolate with peppermint flavoring, let it cool then melt white chocolate on top. Sprinkle crushed candy canes and let cool. Perfect for small bagged gifts of chocolate bark!

  13. My favourite recipe is for gingerbread men. The gingersnaps recipe in the Laura Secord cookbook, but into festive shapes, is the same recipe my mom made when I was little, and that I cook now. Tres canadien!

  14. You remind me I must copy down my mother shortbread recipe. Butter, sugar, flour and a note in her writing “must be prepared entirely by hand – no mixer” or it doesn’t turn out right.

  15. 1 of my fav. holiday recipes is a family friend’s recipe for whipped shortbread! They melt in your mouth! mmmm

  16. Our family’s favourite food tradition at Christmas is: Christmas Morning Bread.

It is a sweet bread recipe with almonds, almond flavouring, raisins, sugar, egg whites in the middle and lemon rind in the dough. Can be baked ahead of time to allow for other important things to be done, like wrap presents. It is heated in foil on Christmas morning, sliced with butter on top, served with hot coffee or tea and fresh fruit on the side and eaten while we open gifts. This is super easy and oh so yummy on Christmas morning! I usually make many and give them to my friends as gifts, which has resulted in this becoming a family tradition for them as well!

I will share the recipe. It is just too long to write here now!

  17. My Christmas favorites are the dream squares my mom always makes. They’re kind of a cross between a date square and butter tart…yum!

  18. My favourite recipe is for the scones we used to eat for breakfast on Christmas Day. We’d cut the dough with Xmas-themed cookie cutters.

    SCONES

    3 c self-rising flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    dash of salt
    1 1/2 tsp sugar
    6 tbsp butter
    1/2 c milk

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Add sugar. Cut in butter with a fork to corn-meal sized mixture. Add milk.

Roll out to one-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes.

Place on non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden.

    Yield: about 8 scones.
