No one wants to be felled by a nasty cold or the flu during the holiday season so we were happy to discover this healthy, natural little arsenal designed to keep your tot’s immune system – and thus yours – in tip top shape.

A combination of Sambucol Black Eldberberry Extract for Kids, vitamin D Baby DDrops and Clean George’s moisturizing Hand Purifier, we like how this cold and flu prevention package covers all your bases from boosting your immune system to that all important task of keeping your kids’ hands less germy.  While you can find all these products separately, Tamara Champion, the mama behind Canada’s bynature.ca, uses this combo with her own family and found it so effective that she put a kit together for her customers.

The elderberry-based Sambucol syrup, which is designed to be taken daily, is rich in immune supporting flavonoids, especially anthocyarins which are found in especially high concentration in black elderberries and are thought to protect the body’s cells from the potential damage caused by free radicals. It also speeds up flu recovery and reduces flu symtoms. The syrup went down a treat with our tiny, and picky, testers. We just wish it came with a built in dispensing system as doling it out a few times a day to multiple kids means the measuring spoons pile up.

And you already know we’re fans of DDrops which are so easy to administer but we’d yet to test Clean George’s Hand Purifier.  Clean George relies on naturally antiseptic Tea Tree Oil and Manuka Oil for purifying. It’s also definitely the most moisturizing hand sanitizer we’ve tried, which is awfully handy at this time of year as our hands are incredibly dry.

No one in our household has succumbed to illness since we started dosing our kids up which is hardly scientific proof of this packages combined flu-fighting effectiveness but then again in might be. And either way we figure an ounce of prevention is worth way more than a pound of cold or flu ravaging through your house.

  1. I’ve used this combination for 2 seasons now (not her’s exactly, I put my own together) and it works like a charm. My son hasn’t gotten a full blown flu yet and colds consist of a minor runny nose for 2 days or so and it’s gone. We also significantly reduce his dairy intake if we see even a whiff of a sniffle coming on and it seems to make a difference.

  2. btw, I use elderberry tincture which has a dropper with it. Dispensing is much easier and tidier!

  3. Thanks for mentioning our flu package Anne-Marie! My 2 year old will drink the Sambucol like it’s juice, so it’s super easy for her to get down when I know she’s starting to fight a cold. We’ll definitely look into the tinctures, though, that Candace has mentioned as an alternative.

I’ll admit, I also love the adult version of Sambucol. When I feel a cold coming on I’ll start my regime and it’s a nice ‘treat’ when you’re feeling under the weather. ;)
