Nail polish is another personal care product that’s full of not so great things like toluene, dibutyl phthelate, formaldehyde, acetone and heavy metals. Which is why we now only trust our pedicures to Scotch Naturals Water Colors Safe Nail Polish.

Unlike conventional, solvent-based polishes, Scotch Naturals uses a water-based formula that’s also designed to nourish and strengthen nails with repeated use. With a low hazard rating of one from the Environmental Working Group (compared to a seven (or high) hazard rating of a conventional nail polish) you can get Scotch Naturals in 13 different stylish colours ranging from a bright pink Tartan Swizzle to Flying Scotsman blue.

We put Kiltlifter, which looks deep pink in the bottle but goes on more orangey, to the test on our tootsies. We like how fast-drying this polish is and how the colour deepens as you layer it on. You don’t need a base or top coat with it, which saves time. We can’t honestly say we’ve noticed our toe nails are stronger, but we haven’t been using it for all that long. One thing we don’t like is their nail polish remover, which doesn’t work without a lot of elbow grease. They’re working on a new formulation but till that comes out we’re sticking with conventional remover.

Scotch Naturals is actually an offshoot of Hopscotch Kids Water Colors Safe Nail Polish which was developed by Ginny Cardenas, a mother of four, who wanted a healthier alternative for painting her tots’ fingers and toes. After the launch of Hopscotch, Cardenas figured mums should be able to get in on the non-toxic action as well and hence, Scotch Naturals.

Our kids’ tested Hopscotch and they were smitten by the polish which comes in lots of kid-friendly colours like Red Rover and Heads Up, Seven Up while we were smitten by the thought of them using hypoallergenic, biodegradable polish. And ‘tis the season for kids of either gender to accessorize their costumes with Hopscotch’s Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater orange and Miss Mary Mack black.  Oooh, spooky!
