Smack dab in the middle of the city is 7.5 acres of year round, fresh-air family fun. Riverdale Farm, owned by the City of Toronto, has cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, and ducks to visit, as well as wooded pathways, ponds, and butterfly and herb gardens to explore. Did you ever get lunchbox notes when you were at school? Little missives from your mother reminding you she was thinking of you? Ours were always written on our bananas, a tradition we continue to this day with our own tots. Well Vancouver mama Maria Freeman has taken things a few steps farther and created Little Jots.

Now that fall is here (can you believe it?) the fairs and harvest festivals are starting to pop up around the GTA. Take the kids to try out their chicken calling skills at Riverdale Farm, or venture outside the city to the Uxbridge Fall Fair, where they can ride the midway and watch tractor pulls. There’s also a vegetarian food fair, Grandparent’s Day weekend celebration, and the chance for the family pet to become a star.

an ounce of prevention

It’s time to settle back into fall routines with kids getting back into the daycare, preschool or kindergarten groove.
