greener summer storing
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | August 6, 2010
With all our summer outing and abouting and picnicking our aim is litterless excursions and thanks to these eco-friendly (and even eco-chic) food storage options our success rate is improving:
We’re well entrenched in our reusable bag habit, but we don’t have as much luck remembering our reusable produce bags but thanks to this vibrant, organic cotton set we’re getting better. And you can use them for more than produce too, they’re printed with reminders of all the things you can put inside, everything from tea to flour and we’ve even used ours as a snack bag. And because reusable bags tend to harbour nasty bacteria, we love that you can throw these in the wash so they’re safe and easy to use again and again. Each set comes with a small, medium and large bag but we wish they had an XL size for super bulky broccoli or for when it’s time to stock up on essentials like rice and oatmeal.
Greentainer’s reusable stainless steel containers come in all sorts of handy sizes but we’re especially fond of the two ounce Compact Greentainer which is the perfect size for dips, hummus or a dollop or two of baby food. Developed by two Toronto mums, Greentainers are made from non-leaching, food grade stainless steel with snug fitting lids that won’t come off in your bag (though we haven’t been brave enough to try anything soupy in ours) and they’re dishwasher safe, which is always an added bonus. Plus when they kick the bucket – which we suspect won’t be anytime soon – you can recycle them.
We wait all year long for peach season (organic of course, as conventional peaches are one of the most pesticide-laden fruits around but much as we love peaches they’re a bit too delicate to throw into your diaper bag unprotected so we’ve been using a Fruit Guard to keep ours unblemished. These BPA-free containers are also great for apples and even grapes. They’re quite spacious so if we need to stop our peaches from rattling around we wrap them in a reusable napkin inside the guard. And though the companion Banana Guard may make you snicker, it really does keep bananas squish-free.
