better baggies

Once you’re settled on the perfect lunchbox then you need containers to hold all the delicious, organic, exotic goodies you put in it. Or goldfish crackers. We’re fans of stainless steel containers but they can be bulky and heavy, so we like to shake things up a little and mix and match stainless steel with reusable baggies.
Lunchskins makes brightly patterned, useful reusable sandwich and snack bags. Lead, BPA and phthalate-free, these fasten with Velcro and can be hand washed or thrown into the dishwasher. Hand sewn in the US from European food-grade pastry fabric you’ll use these over and over again and we find their bright prints always make us smile. Plus we’ve also used ours to tote crayons, snacks for our own lunches and Playmobil.
If you’re more of a silent snacking type, than Itzy Ritzy’s reusable snack bag which fastens with a lead-free zipper may be more your style. At 7” square it can fit snacks or even a sandwich and the cotton fabric has a BPA and PVC-free lining. It’s machine-washable and like plastic baggies, which you’ll be buying far fewer of, you can use it for all sorts of things, not just snacks. Think iPods, digital cameras and pacifiers – just not all at together. And both the Lunchskins and Itzy Ritzy bags are a fun way to package up party favours.
Once you’ve got the baggie issue settled why not finish greening your child’s lunch kit with Fabkins? These organic, cotton reusable napkins are definitely designed for kids rather than adults as each set of four is embroidered with a different theme, think ballerinas, sports and safaris. They’re fun enough that your child will feel cool pulling them out at daycare or school but not so OTT that you wouldn’t mind using them for meals at home. And they’re definitely picnic-worthy. Heck you could even add them to the reusable baggies you’re filling up with party favours.

Another timely piece! We need to get some of these things this year for the new school. Having tested the velcro ones, do you have any feedback on how long the velcro continues to seal? That’s one of my worries. Also I wonder if little bits could escape still? I think I am leaning the zipper ones for being sure that small things don’t escape but I could be totally wrong. I am just envisioning little things coming out the top corners around the velcro.
