Living in Toronto means your kids’ typical Saturday probably won’t involve feeding goats, jumping in hay bales, or taking a tractor ride to a field of strawberries ripe for picking. Luckily for us city dwellers, we can satisfy those farm fantasies and get some outdoor family fun with a trip to Springridge Farm.

Located in Milton, Springridge is a reasonable 40-minute drive from downtown T.O. For only $3 (ages two and up) you can visit the farm animals, jump in hay bales, race through cornstalk mazes, let the kids loose in the massive covered sandbox, and “milk” the wooden cow. There are also tractor rides, weekend pony rides (an extra $3 per ride), and in the summer, rows of berries to be picked. Frequent visitors can buy a season’s pass.

Owned and run by the Hughes family, fruit farmers for six generations, Springridge has been operating since 1960. The farm is small enough to feel secure as your kids roam the activity areas, yet has ample parking and lunch seating under huge, shade-providing trees. They offer a kid’s lunch, which is served in a sand pail complete with shovel that the child gets to keep. All their treats and sandwiches are made fresh and the grilled ham, Brie, apple and homemade pepper jelly is by far a favourite. Summer offerings include homemade strawberry muffins, pies, tarts and preserves. The farm also hosts Easter, harvest season, and Christmas festivals, as well as school tours and birthday parties.

So if the weekend is upon you and the kids are getting squirrely, head to Springridge for a fun and active family daytrip. All you have to bring is your camera, appetite, and quarters so the kids can feed the animals.
